Maintenance TechThis forum is for discussion of all aspects of maintenance that should be performed on the FJ Cruiser to keep it operating at maximum efficiency.
Took my FJ back to the dealer yesterday for the 5,000 mile oil change. Changed out the oil for Amsoil SAE 0W-30 Synthetic Signature Series Oil, Amsoil EAO57 Oil filter, fluids in the front differential, rear differential, and transfer case were replaced with Amsoil Severe Gear SAE 75W-90. I had the mechanic check out the old oil in the rear differential. It looked a lot darker than the oil in the front diff. He told me that is normal, the oil in the rear diff is always darker and it also contains a small amount of metal shavings on the magnetic plug. He also said that if there is a problem like excessive wear the oil would be a lot darker, more metal shavings but the big difference would be in the odor of the oil, it would really have a bad smell to it.

I have three free oil changes I negotiated but after that I am converting mine to all synthetic as well....plus air filter and oil filters. it does make a difference and you save money in long run.
congrats....

I'm am Amsoil dealer so I got it at cost. It definitely costs more than regular oil but I don't have to change the oil or filter for 20,000 miles or one year so in the long run it is cheaper than changing your oil and filter every 3,000 miles. Plus your engine runs cooler and your gas mileage goes up. It used to be that although the oil would last 20,000 miles the filter would have to changed every 5,000 miles but with the new EAO57 filter it lasts as long as the oil. PM me if you need additional information.
yep..it is hard to get people off the routine of 3000 mile changes when it is not needed.....and show them the benefits of using the amsoil filter and oil.

That's too true but I think people are starting to come around. I am really sold on this product, I even use it in the Honda engine on my flatsboat and in my lawnmower!
.....Where would I get Amsoil products and what would oil and filter cost? (approx)

if you have someone local you can use them....can find them through AMSOIL webpage. If not you can contact myself or MikeH as we are both dealers. I do not know the rules or how mods feel about this here so I try not to come across as salesman on here...just sharing information and if you choose to click a link fine...if not that is fine too.

I was always told not to put Synthetic oil in the engine till everything is well seated. About 30,000 miles or when factory warrenty is up. Also 0 w 30 here in Florida? Mabe in Alaska but here I think 10 w 40 at least. I also plan on using synthetic in the diffs and trasfer case but not till around 15,000 miles so they have time to polish and seat together. Just my .02 and I'm leaning toward Redline Synthetic Oil.
