Oil Capacity with Oil and Filter change?

I've change my own oil for 30+ years and have never been more confused. I've read the oil capacity for the FJ is 6.4 quarts and also 5.5 quarts when changing oil and filter. I changed the oil and filter with Amsoil 5W-30 and ea057 filter and added 6.0 quarts but can't get a clear reading on the dipstick and now I am afraid I have over-filled it. From those with experience, what is the actual oil capacity when changing the oil? If it should only be 5.5, do I need to drain half a quart to be safe? Thanks!

Re: Oil Capacity with Oil and Filter change?

Engine Lube:

Oil Capacity (drain and refill)

Litres with filter 5.2

Quart with filter 5.5

Imp with filter 4.6

Without changing the filter:

Litres 4.9
quart 5.2
Imp 4.6

The dipstick is hard to read with clean oil.

I measure exactly what I put in and have done all my own oil changes .

You also might really wanna change your rear diff fluid pretty quick also.

I went with Royal purple in the rear diff .

Oh and Hi

Re: Oil Capacity with Oil and Filter change?

When I drained mine, it was about 5.2-5.3 quarts.

When I switched to the Mobile 1 filter which is much larger, I had to put in 6 quarts.

Re: Oil Capacity with Oil and Filter change?

Welcome Frog,

Rough up your dipstick with some steel wool or emery cloth (make sure you wipe off the particles obviously) and you will see your oil line better.

I just changed to Amsoil 5W30 (ASL) and an Ea057 oil filter and added 5 qts. flat and my oil level is just below full.

I've never seen 6.4 qts published anywhere for the FJ.

Re: Oil Capacity with Oil and Filter change?

Thanks all for the input. I'll roughen up the dipstick and will drain a bit of oil.

Great forum!
