Maintenance TechThis forum is for discussion of all aspects of maintenance that should be performed on the FJ Cruiser to keep it operating at maximum efficiency.
I have read on here that the drive shafts for the fj should be lubed every 5000 miles. I have never lubed the driveshaft of any vehicle so I am a little confused. Where should I lube the driveshaft, what part of it, how much lube or oil should be put on it, and what kind of lube should I put on it and where can I find it? Thanks for the advice.

Re: Drive shaft lube
You'll find two slip joints and a zerk fitting on each. I believe a moly based grease is preferred for slip joints. Each U-joint will also have a Zerk fitting. Not too much in the slip joints; two or three squirts. Some say to lube the U-joints until you fluse the onld grease and some say it's not nessessary. I use one of the small grease guns (3oz) and just about used the cartridge up. At 15,000 miles everything seemed pretty dry. Cheers.. Ron

i do it every oil change with the amount Ron listed above. I give the ujoints enough til the grease starts to come out and make that crackling noise, I then wipe the excess off.

Do you have any trouble getting the grease gun off of the front ujoints/driveshaft???
I always have to get a flathead screwdriver to pry the grease gun off. It is a PITA. I make sure the nip is clean and that i am pulling straight off and still, hard as anything to get it off.

Can't you loosen the "nozzle" on your grease gun? I have an ancient gun that you can loosen and tighten the aperature. Sorry for the choice of words but I just don't know the technical terms. The part that fits over the zerk fitting rotates on my grease gun. Righty tighty, lefty.....you know

So do I have to use a grease gun to lube the drive shaft? Or can I just grab the grease with my fingers and spread it on the drive shaft? I'm asking because I don't have a grease gun. And is the mobil 1 synthetic grease they sell at autozone ok to use on the drive shaft? Heres the url AutoZone.com | Lubricant/Grease
Thanks again for the answers because this is totally new to me and I don't want to mess up my new truck by putting something on it that does not belong on it.

Re: Drive shaft lube
Grease gun.. The slip joints have a zerk fitting. That's what they mean by "lubing the drive shaft". It's not actually the shafy, but rather the slip joints.. Cheers.. Ron

Yep, you need a grease gun because you are not greasing the outside of the shaft or U-Joints. Push the end of the grease gun on the zerk fitting and pump away into the u-joints till you push the old crap out. As Ron said...only about two or three pumps on the slip joint.
Layton, try angleing the tip of the grease gun at a 45* to remove from the zerk. I have to literally push the tip of my gun into the zerk or grease just pushes out around the fitting rather than going into the zerk. I use M1 synthetic pink grease....keeps me in touch with my feminine side...lol.
