basic tune-up leads to low unsteady rpms and lights!

Well, I've spent the last 6 hours reading horror stories and trying to find answers to my problems with no luck, at this point I'm beyond frustrated and will happily pay Toyota any price to make my problems go away

Here's my story, was diving to a friends house when the "Maintenance Required" light came on. No big deal. the next day I picked up everything I needed and started my tune up. The everything went together light clock work. except when I started the rig back up it began to Idle about 450rpms lower than usual (usually idles at 1000-1100rpms) while in drive. Not only that, but the rpms jump constantly between 500rpms and 750rpms. It dosnt only do this while idling. when driving you could still feel the "jump" in the throttle. like its slightly speeding up and slowing down continuously while driving. I also have the Check Engine light, Skid light, and the two lights under that continuously on.

Well I read a couple forums and yes, the fuel cap is all the way on, and it is the original factory cap. Also, the oil I changed was the engine oil, and the dip stick is showing the engine is at full with clean new oil. So I figured maybe I need to reset the computer so the engine can reprogram itself to the tune-up. . So I unplugged my battery for 40min. This did take care of the check engine and 3 other lights. Not that it fixed the problem, but I'm guessing that it just erased the error codes. I took it for a spin and the only light still on is the "Maintenance Req" light. , but I still have the problem of the "jumpy" rpms and the truck not driving smoth .

So the rig is on curb duty for know until I can get it to the dealer to get looked over. I was quoted $105 to connect the computer to the fj and pull the codes!! . But at this point, I'm feeling like Im willing to pay anything just to be done with this problem. Tomorrow I'm going to pull the spark plugs back out and check their connections to make sure theyre all in correct. and if that doesnt fix it. I'm just going to take it in to the dealership and let them have their way with me . If anyone has any other ideas, I'm more than willing to give them a shot.

If your a/c is on you can see rpm jumps when the compressor cycles on. You can also turn off the maint. light. It tells you how in your owners manual. Iguess short of that, make sure you have the right plugs in and that they are gapped correctly. I wouldn't run to the dealer just yet.

check the spark plug wires are on good and tight. I changed out the half bank for an even set of NGK (instead of the 3 denso/3 NGK) and missed one plug (didnt push it down all the way). Needless to say, the car ran terrible til I figured out it was misfiring.

The maintenence light doesnt go away by itself... you clear it by pushing on the trip odometer reset during ignition. Its a sequence I forget on the top of my head.

hold down the odometer button and turn the car to on without starting it and hold the button till you see the dash marks go away on the odometer to reset the maintenance required light.

As far as the engine, it sounds like it missing on a plug so as stated above you need to check all your connections to each plug and make sure they are clicked into place.

Re: basic tune-up leads to low unsteady rpms and lights!

You guys are the BEST . I skipped out on my appointment with the dealer to try out your suggestions. I decided to pull and inspect each spark plug to see if I find anything suspicious. I did find a loose screw holding down one of the spark plug connectors, but it was tight enough that I don't think it would really be causing any problem. What I did find though, which Im pretty sure was the problem was a plug that was not gapped at all!! . two firing points where completely touching. I'm pretty sure this was keeping the FJ from firing properly if at all on that cylinder.

I also got the maint req' light off . Know shes running like a beaut on all cylinders with no lights. I owe you guys one!! Thanks a lot this forum is great.

Now I'm just wondering if there is going to be any charge for skipping out on my appointment with the dealer. I'm sure they'll find someway to send me a bill

Send a bill to who?
You never called them must have been a prank (probably by someone who owns a jeep or a hummer).

In drive with the A/C off the rpms should be 550 and in neutral 750 rpm.

Yep, spark plugs should not have a 0 gap! That would not be good...
