Rear brake change.

I would like a little help on changing the rear brakes. Does one compress the back caliper the same as the front or is their a specail tool to do this? Some trucks with rear disc brakes require a tool to turn the caliper in to make room for the new pads.

Re: Rear brake change.

I've not had to change the brakes on the FJ yet but I see no reason why the rear discs would be any different then the front. You can use the inexpensive special tool or a C-clamp to compress the caliper piston(s).

I'm still on my original brakes at 85,000 miles; might have to change the front pads soon just because but they still look OK.

Every other Toyota I have or have had (with disc brakes), the calipers come off easily by removing one pin and rotating it or by removing both pins. Like DEWFPO says, use a cheap caliper piston compressor available at any auto parts store or a C-clamp and a small block of wood to get the piston back in the caliper.
