Maintenance TechThis forum is for discussion of all aspects of maintenance that should be performed on the FJ Cruiser to keep it operating at maximum efficiency.
I know there was a thread that discussed this a bit, but I can't find it.
The EA057 filter is no longer listed as a oil filter to use on the Amsoil website for the FJ. If I remember correctly it was something to do with the Toyota filters clogging up and would not last to the specified extended oil change times.
They do however list the WIX filter. Does this mean that the WIX paper filter is being recommended to use INSTEAD of the synthetic Amsoil filter? Not for extended oil changes of course.
Should I stop using the EA057 filter? Is it OK to use the EA057 if I change it out at 5K?
Thanks.
[Edit] Nevermind. Found the info.

Amsoil no longer recommends the EaO09, EaO10, EaO57 oil filters for TOYOTA/LEXUS built engines for the extended 25,000 mile drain interval. The only way they will endorse the EaO filter for our trucks is if we use them at OEM drain interval recommendations. Even in that case, they still recommend using the comparable WIX 51348 instead of the EaO57, to save you some money. No sense in paying $16+ for the EaO filters anymore.

I called them about it, they didn't last long enough so they took them off the list until they find out why. They said to use another filter and change it out half way, depending on what oil you are using. just add half a quart when you change the filter. The dealer on this forum said the amsoil filter is fine for 10k and that because I was using xl (7500 miles) it should last for that, its the 25k that it didn't make it to.
I'm using the big job EaO15 on the FJ currently. It's has at least the 2x (maybe more) capacity of the stock sized EaO57. The only down side is that the oil light stays on an extra 1-2 seconds on cold startup but you've also got an extra .5 qts of oil in the system as well.

Re: Amsoil EAO57 filter
I've been using the EA057 filters on mine for 90,000 miles now and have had zero problems, but I don't go 25,000 miles between changes, only half of that. Still have several in stock and I'll keep using those until they're gone.

same here...use both Eao 15 and 57 with no issues...but I only go 15,000 miles between changes not full 25,000. I am sure they will have it fixed in no time... one thing they do is stand behind their product and make it right.

It could be something as simple as they had claimed it was the best 15micron filter on market and such...and if it is found not to work to the exact standards they are claiming they will take it down and fix it. I would not worry too much about it....personally. I'm not concerned at all with my FJ Cruiser
The Eao 15 is a great filter....can always use it. It is same one I use on my FJ60..just takes a bit to fill that big ass filter with oil to get pressure up. LOL

I was actually planning on using this filter, along with the Amsoil combination main/bypass filter head
So, if I'm reading the responses correctly, does the EA057 plug a lot sooner than it should? To me, that implies there is a lot of trash loading up the oil
Over 2 years of used oil analysis, running a variety of oils, has informed me that at least my FJ has issues with nitration. Nitration can either imply too hot running temp, or frequent cold short trips. If the oil doesn't have a good additive package, especially a high TBN, the oil will quickly break down, creating sludge and other deposits
The nitration effects different oils in different ways. For example: Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40 experienced some shear: the fresh viscosity at 100 C is around 14.1 cSt, the used samples I've had were around 12.5 cSt. Not alarming, but the testing lab did comment on this, but was not concerned. Even after 7,700 miles, the TBN was still >8
Mobil 1 0W-20, on the other hand, actually thickened up. The oil will test fresh around 8.4 cSt at 100 C. My sample tested 10.5 cSt. Nitration was much higher too, the ending TBN was 5 for an interval 1/3 that of the 0W-40
IN all cases, I ran the dealership Toyota oil filter
I'm currently running the made in Germany Castrol Syntec 0W-30. Since I won't be changing it until October sometime, we'll have to wait until then for a used oil analysis

In some limited instances it could reduce oil flow (pressure) enough to activate your sensor light in the FJ. So they are recommending you change it as soon as convenient...but if light illuminates to change it immediately. They recommend replacing with Wix or Mann filters until they can determine the issue cause and fix it.
(AMSOIL also offers MANN Filters as an alternative to the Ea Filtration line and recommends the MANN ML1003 Oil Filter for Toyota/Lexus applications
that previously called for an EaO57 Filter. MANN Oil Filterscan be used for up to 7,500 miles when used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic motor oil.)
That being said I have never had the problem in my own Toyota vehicles running either EaO57 or EaO15 variants. I would personally just watch it closely but if it makes you feel better then swap it out.
