Maintenance TechThis forum is for discussion of all aspects of maintenance that should be performed on the FJ Cruiser to keep it operating at maximum efficiency.
I was just wondering if you can or if anyone on the forum has ever mixed gear oil? For example, if two oils had the same viscosity (mobil1 and royal purple) and I wanted to use 1.5 quarts of each plus or minus, would it actually have any adverse affects or would it not change anything?
I just purchased 4 quarts of Royal Purple to change out my diff fluid but I was just thinking about it since the price between the two oils which are both synthetic are pretty significant. $10 for mobil1 and $17 for RP

I think it says on the Mobil1 site or maybe even on the bottle that it is compatible with all oils. Would I do it? Nope... i'ld fill it up with one of the other.
In many cases Mobil1 is better... other times RedLine is better. In reality, I don't think it's worth the extra $7 a qrt. That's why a lot of people are using Mobil 1... it's cheap, easy to get, and works good. Certainly better than non-synthetic.

I was getting ready to drop the rear diff lube again and it turns out I only have 3 qts. of the Amsoil SVG that I was going to use, but I have 1 qt. of MTG that I used for the transfer case. Both are 75W90 and both are Amsoil products. I know there are different friction modifiers in each but I will only be using something like 0.1-0.2 qts of the MTG with the 3 qts of SVG.

I figured it wouldn't do any damage as long as each had the LS additives but it's just something that came to mind. I've been in the situation a few times with my vehicles where I've had 2 or 3 qts of one brand and 1 qt of another.

Hypoid gear applications require specific additives - not necessarily LSD additives - to prevent certain types of gear spalling and wear. Your question should actually be addressed by Amsoil directly, I'm sure you can wait a week or so to get the correct answer straight from the horses mouth
Personally, I would NOT mix a GL-4 with a GL-5, and use it in a hypoid gear application. If you accidentally refill a hypoid gear with GL-4 (Don't ask, it's a long story and I prefer not thinking about it), the rear end will quickly destroy itself
As far as the cost of gear oils, I just picked up a pail of Mobil Delvac Synthetic 75W-90, a commercial gear oil, for $128. The stuff has gone up $18 over a couple of years ago. On a per litre/quart basis, that works out to $6.40.
Individual litre/quart bottles of Redline gear oil are $13. I think I'll stick with buying pails of the commercial Delvac product
