The Mercedes 5W-30 isn't made by Mobil, it's either Castrol, Agip, Aral, etc. The oil is specifically formulated to meet the MB specs I mentioned.
Mobil 1 0W-40 easily meets those MB specs too, but no other Mobil 1 oil in the lineup does
I went to the UK site for BP, and according to their handy lubricant advisor, your car they recommend BP Visco 5000 5W-40, a synthetic; or, Visco 3000 10W-40, a blend
Like Toyota, there are plenty of Mercedes dealerships in North America that won't use the correct oil, will substitute without your knowledge but bill you for the expensive stuff, etc.
Doesn't that car hold 8 litres of oil? It doesn't require an oil change more often than once a year or every 16,000 miles

what about the mobil 1 0w-30 in the fj? how does that stack up against the 5w? any differences?

The 0W-30 will offer better cold start performance, especially below 0 F. At operating temp, in summer, the same performance as the 5W-30
If your winter temps are consistently below 0 F, especially below -20 F, run a 0W-30, 0W-40, or 0W-20
Note, I have provided oil analysis on all three used in my FJ. I had the best results with Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40. If you live in Arctic conditions, the 0W-20 would be most appropriate
However, after only 3,000 miles, the 0W-20 experienced high nitration and actually thickened up to the xW-30 range. If I lived in Arctic conditions, I'd probably use the oil, but change it frequently.
Am currently running the made in Germany Canstrol Syntec 0W-30, as its far easier for me to find up here. When I change the oil sometime this month, I'll send off a sample and report back
Running the dealership 5W-20, Mobil 1 0W-30, Mobil 1 0W-20, and Castrol Syntec 0W-30, guess what the difference was in fuel economy?
None whatsoever
