I've often wondered where the name "Man-A-Fre" came from. All of the other vendor's names you can figure it out, but this one I never have. It kinda sounds like the same theme as '70's and '80's basketball player "World B. Free," but not. So what the heck does it mean?
Well, a combination of Steve and a translation of a Japanese Land Cruiser magazine and I have it. Man-A-Fre started in 1967 as a manufacturer of manifold free injections. So the founder kinda twisted than into "Man-A-Fre". Say it quick and it almost works / makes sense.
Only later did MAF become the world's greatest source for all things FJ (from the FJ25 to the FJC). As a side note, it is interesting how the FJC has become a great integrator of two pretty much separate Toyota traditions / lines. First is the true FJ line, which runs from the post war BJ and into the classic FJ40 and thence to the also very tough FJ80's and finally to today's landcruisers that are most rugged vehicle to go get your kids from school in. The second line is the quite separate T100, Tacoma, 4runner lineage. The FJC melds these two lines. Some of the vendors that we all use are of the former lineage (like MAF), while some are of the latter (like Inchworm). It's interesting that the FJC can draw on both these significant lineages.
Steve did explain to me what a manifold free injection is, but I've forgotten
The word is misspelled. It shoud read, "Man, it should be free"...
Or "Man, I wish it were free" as in, wish they'd've put that on stock (like the aux tank, bumpers that don't shatter, and skids that don't buckle on rock contact)
ive heard of a similar word... manifaire (ancient french)
manifaire = barding = ancient horse armour.
only thing I could relate it to...
Yeah, I was just kidding abut the 1967 thing. You got it. Man-A-Fre has been in business since 1023 when they started as an outfit to build armour for horses in the Norman army. They built the N-257 "heavy battle armour" for William's frontline "shock" cavalry in 1066. In the mid 1500's they got into recreational "offroad" horse armour. The interest in extreme horse rock crawling came to the US in the early 1700's via Mexico, and MAF has been building some of the best offroad horse -- and then of course later truck -- accessories and protection since the foundation of the California Republic.
