So are these tanks Legal in Cali, or do we think they are legal. The are not DOT approved . I really want one , but I am unsure about the california laws.
They're DOT legal and legal in CA because it's a closed system using the OEM filler tube system. I don't know about "approved". The problem with having an auxiliary tank that feeds directly into the engine is that it's almost impossible to get it past EPA. An auxiliary tank that feeds into the main tank is another issue entirely. CRUISER LARRY addressed his feelings on this earlier and I think he's on point. You'd need to speak to MAF directly on this since I'm a customer ONLY, not their spokesman.

This means Larry will be able to sell fuel on his next run...I get the first spot behind him, being in the greatest need.
At the rate you burn fuel, Todd, I'm going to need to get a couple more tanks to make this a reality.

Does anyone have an estimate on how long it would take to get a tank at this point?

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

There were a couple of tests that I wanted to run on my new Aux tank from MAF.
1) Ease of Fill.
2) Transfer time of fuel from full aux tank to empty main tank.
3) Fill of both tanks when Totally empty for TOTAL Fuel Capacity.
4) Aux Gauge accuracy.

I tested (1) just after I left MAF. It fill very nice and seems to put about 3/4 of the fuel in the main tank and 1/4 in the aux tank. I was almost but not totally empty of fuel when I had it installed so I really couldn't test (3) yet. It filled continuously with no stops until they were full. I did'nt have to prod it to keep filling and once it clicked off it was FULL! Both gauges were paged on "F". So that tested (4) also.
I also just got done using my first main tank of gas since it was installed (375 miles - so I know it was really full when I first filled it) and it took aprox. 15min to fill the main tank from the aux tank. I did it when the needle was right on top of the "E", about 30 miles after my low fuel light went on. I tranferred the fuel when I was driving also with NO glitches. I could also hear a slight hum from the new aux tank's fuel pump. I seemed to still have a little in the Aux tank too. So It is slightly more then 19 Gallons, but I'll know for sure when I test (3).
Here's some pic's of the install by MAF. as you can see there are NO clearance issues with the factory trailer package hitch or plug and plenty fo clearance for my TRD exhaust too. I was laying on the ground to take these pics too, so it's not that noticeable when behind the FJ.

How do you think they reeled Larry in?

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Anyone have a guess as to how hard the install to do this is?

I'm not sure I would try and tackle it myself, but how about a 4x4 shop like Metal Tech? Or is this something that MAF needs to do?

I'm having my tank installed at MAF next week and Steve told me that they'd need 4-6 hours to install the auxillary tank and the auxillary fuel gauge.

I don't know exactly what's involved, but I'm absolutely sure that it's nothing that I would want to do myself and will hazard a guess that quite a few 4x4 shops would pass on the job because of the potential liability issues. I don't know what kind of instructions MAF has for the "kit" yet, but they'd need to be fairly detailed so that a potential installer could assess the difficulty and the potential risks of the installation.

So, I'd suggest you call Steve at MAF to get a copy of the instructions he has and run it by your local shops to see if it's something that think they can do or not.
