Read the post above yours, Dom. I think that's the real (reel?) answer!

I'm having my tank installed at MAF next week and Steve told me that they'd need 4-6 hours to install the auxillary tank and the auxillary fuel gauge.
I don't know exactly what's involved, but I'm absolutely sure that it's nothing that I would want to do myself and will hazard a guess that quite a few 4x4 shops would pass on the job because of the potential liability issues. I don't know what kind of instructions MAF has for the "kit" yet, but they'd need to be fairly detailed so that a potential installer could assess the difficulty and the potential risks of the installation.
So, I'd suggest you call Steve at MAF to get a copy of the instructions he has and run it by your local shops to see if it's something that think they can do or not.
So does this mean they are finally ready, or are you just one of the lucky few "testers" still?
Uh......I know what comes to mind when I read that but what comes to YOUR mind?

At this point, MAF has a low but commercial volume of tanks. They've been working from the start of the customer lists for the last few weeks. So, yeah, these are no longer "test" units, these are finally the commercial units. MAF has just been quiet about it because the list was so long already, they didn't / don't want people to think they have 100's of units in the warehouse ready to go (i.e. they don't want to get inundated with "can I get my tank" phone calls - if you already have an order in play, your tank will come up in the order that the order was received - sound like a voicemail queue don't I --- if you don't have an order already placed, then in that case it's OK to call, but be warned that there will be an extended delay while the backorder queue is worked off). They have a limited supply, but will be getting more as time goes by and the list will get worked off.

Just to help stem the tide of phone calls to MAF, the "estimated" cost of the installation including tax and labor for the auxillary tank and fuel gauge in my FJ is $1700!
That's $1000 for the tank & pump switch, $80 for the fuel guage & sensor, $80 tax and $540 for labor. People who do the work themselves will save the labor and people out of state will save the tax, but there are obvious hazards to doing the work yourself. It won't be easy and if you screw up your FJ could blow up or go up in flames.
This should stop the flood of calls to MAF right away.

I may have to look into installing most of this myself and getting a shop to do the difficult pieces.

Wow, $1700 bucks. That's as much as a high quality suspension system installed.
I was beginning to be able to choke down a cost of $1000 (and then I figured a couple of hundred for the install), but $1700 is another story
I'd only charge you half that amount for the install...and that would come with my unique "I have no idea what I'm doing...and I promise ya that" guarantee! A bargain for what you get...really. I'll just wait for the phone call.
