Dropped my truck off at MAF this morning for my tank install. I'll be picking it up in a couple of hours. The really cool switch/fuel guage is on back order so I'll just have an Aux pump switch in one of the lower panel switch blanks for now.
When the switch comes in we'll try putting it in the unused round hole in the center panel to the right of the radio. This is the area for the fancy Toyota alarm feedback display. If the cool Aussie switch doesn't fit there then it will go in the silver panel to the left of the steering wheel.
My buddy took his FJ in to MAF yesterday but he has a Warn rear bumper that has a mounting bracket in the way. He and MAF are working on adapting the tank mounting to accommodate the Warn bumper brackets. If you have a Warn rear bumper you'll have to wait a little longer for the mounting solution.

I was scheduled for a tank install yesterday and all was well, until 4 hours into the process it was discovered that the support brackets for the Warn rear bumper interfered and the tank wouldn't fit. 2 hours later with truck returned to stock condition (no tank) I sadly left. The fix is simple but requires a small change to the support brackets that shift the tank about 3/8" inch to the passenger side. I was at MAF for the duration of this attempted install and saw firsthand what is involved. Anyone who is comfortable with installing a winch/bumper or lift kit could do this install as long as they respect the fact that while the filler tube is replaced the vehicle's gas tank is open to air and gas vapor is very dangerous. MAF is using the early installs to refine the proceedure and find other issues like mine before they are ready to release the tanks to self installers. They have done installs with stock, Road Armour, All Pro and possibly more rear bumpers without issue. Mine was the first Warn so part of the time was spent in measuring the changes needed for future production. I concur with Larry about the build of the tank and skidplate. mir207's truck was at the shop and I have to say that if he didn't hurt the bigger tank without a skidplate I'm not worried about the production one with a skid. mir207's truck has definetely been driven very hard. The guys at MAF were great and I will be getting a tank as soon as they can make the changes needed which is unknown at this time.
Does anyone have a picture of this cool Aussie switch/gauge?

Uphill and everyone else, you know that I have a stock FJ. But even on our short runs into the desert, we always pack and use extra fuel. So this mod is worth an extreme feasibility look at $ wise. But as everyone knows, 1 mod leads to others that have to be made to compensate for the 1 mod. You probably already know where this is going.
If I have the tank installed, in your humble estimation, what would be the minimum suspension mod that I would be looking at to compensate for the extra weight? Heavy duty shocks and springs? (If "shocks and springs" is all wrong, caulk it up to a real newbie techwise) Then would I have to do something to the front end to compensate for what I did at the back? Feed back would be appreciated by everyone.

The weight added wouldn't be more than a metal bumper and the fuel you already carry. I think you could run it stock, but it might be worth adding a heavier coil spring. They are NOT expensive.
One day if you want to improve the suspension, you can do that. When we're in Death Valley in a couple of weeks, drive my rig around a bit and see how it "feels" with the improved suspension, tank, etc.

My suspension is completely stock and I have no plans to lift or otherwise modify it because of height concerns.
I've got a Lucrum mount, Warn M8000 winch and extra Optima battery upfront (about 160lbs) and noticed no significant drop in height after I installed them up there, so I wouldn't expect any significant difference in back either. If there is any problem in the rear, I just plan to add a pair of AirLift airbags to carry the load.
BTW: One of the reasons I bailed out on the DV run late last year was concern over the availability of gas and the ability to get to the Racetrack from Furnace Creek or Stovepipe Wells and back to a gas station before running out of fuel. Guess I won't have to worry about that anymore after I get the aux tank installed next week.

The link below shows an 80 series aux tank on top and below that is a picture of the type of guage/switch that steve is trying to get from AU. The guage part has to be built to match the sending unit already in the tanks.
I noticed that a lot of new forum members are getting tanks. Other than Uphill and Mir I have not seen any of the other forum heavies weigh in yet. Looking for feedback from the masters!
