Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Maybe the lights going OUT is a bad thing. Yay, its really strange. But I will live with not looking at lights all the time. Of course until they come back on.

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Unless I missed it in this thread, has anyone posted up a copy of Man-A-Fre's actual installation instructions yet??

If not, could someone please do so?? I'd love to see what the installation entails.

I thought the only ones installed have been done by Man-a-Fre? If they were the only ones doing it i wouldn't expect any formal instructions.

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Nope, I got my tank strapped to a pallet and installed it myself. The "manual" is pretty sketchy and although I think I still have it, the instructions are somewhat misleading and/or wrong. To be fair; it appears to be written for an internal fuel pump, and it seems they are now shipping with an external pump.
If you want to get an idea of what's involved, search here for the posting re: installing the MAF tank in the ARB FJ. I wound up using that at least as much as the instructions that came with the tank. In fact, it's a must-read.
I offered to re-write the instructions, but never got a response, and probably a good thing, in light of possible liability issues.
I'd be happy to share my experiences re: installation but, note I'm still getting the "check engine" light; so what the heck do I know

:-)

As a few of you may know Freddie is no longer with MAF - and i have filled his position here. As a result, we are no longer using his instructions and i will be re-writing them on our next tank install. Once i have a copy, I will post it up on this site...

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Ben, is there anything you can add about the lights situation? Just curious.

Internal/external? I thought we all had internal?

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Ben (!Cruzer!):...good to know...thanks and congrats (I hope!)
Cactus JK: Frankly I was expecting an internal pump and the instructions refer to an internal pump. I had to call MAF to find out where the heck to mount it.
(BTW, !Cruzer!; are you still recommending the rear crossmember? Seems kinda vulnerable).

I'd definitely make sure Ben's new instructions come with the tank when you order it. My instructions had the pin numbers for the relay (for the fuel pump switch) totally dorked up, I wound up buying a bunch of fuses for the relay and experimented until I didn't blow a fuse.

All this said, and "check engine" lights notwithstanding; the tank fit in without effort and, for me, totally changes the driving experience with the FJ. We spend a lot of time in the backcountry and dragging around 20 gallons of gas on the roof rack sucked, as did filling the tank from a jerry can in a snowstorm. If I had to replace my FJ, I'd be calling MAF for another tank before I left the dealership.

Even though my tank is installed, still want good installation instructions. One never knows when you would want to pull the tank.

Thanks Ben.
