Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

The skid that protects the aux tank looks kinda flimsy in the pics, Is it just me or is it fairly stout?

It's not a Budbuilt or MAF belly skid if that's where you're going. It's made of aluminum and it's set off the tank to absorb damage, but no, it's not heavy.

Is it adequate? My sense is that it is and I defer to MIR207's nearly year long testing of a larger tank (without a skid). MIR207 drives his rig hard. Ask anyone who wheeled with him. After taking on some of the rougher trails in California and Nevada that are transited by FJC's, the larger tank suffered no trail damage. I think that's primarily due to the location. Could it? Yeah. Did it? apparently not. One of the skid considerations MAF was concerned with was weight and complaints from forum members about how much the tank would weigh. There is no perfect solution but I'm satisfied with the steps they took.

Wasn't trying to take a dig at Budbuilt or MAF, it was just an observation.

I understand. I was just trying to explain as well. I think it's adequate given the location and the general vulnerability of the area -- but time will tell.

I think Larry has this down right. It's REALLY hard to hit it up there. So that's the first line of defense. As to the skid, I don't know what grade aluminium has been used so I can't speak to how well it will bare up to impact. It was designed and material selected by a guy who builds these tanks for Baja racing trucks, so I suspect it will be OK. But Larry has it right, we won't know until we all take them out over gnarly rock crawling trails and let plate-hit-rock. Being hard to reach didn't stop Larry from testing the Inchworm e-locker guard, and I suspect one of us will somehow bang our gas tank skids on a rock or two at some point. Then we will know ...

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Awesome install. A very good investment for those longer trips, and it looks like it was done right, very high quality so it seems like its worth the wait. I'll be looking at getting one of these soon.

So designing a tank that does not directly fuel the vehicle allows the mfgr to bypass emissions certification for the vehicle application, just as if you had a gerry can to pump into your tank...
So are these tanks Legal in Cali, or do we think they are legal. The are not DOT approved . I really want one , but I am unsure about the california laws.

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

Does anyone have an estimate on how long it would take to get a tank at this point? I am assuming there is a pretty long list of people in line ahead of me waiting for their new aux tank.
BTW the installed pics look great, I plan on taking trips to the Oregon coast for some wheelin in "the Dunes" and possibly to D.C., the extended range would be very useful.

Re: FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED

This means Larry will be able to sell fuel on his next run.

While underway we will have to daisy-chain behind his rig, connected by fuel hoses. I get the first spot behind him, being in the greatest need.

Let's hope he is charitable in his pricing structure.
