I'm still struggling with the shotgun rack placement because I still use the FJ to transport family members from time to time and need the back seat. I also do longer trips and need to fold up the rear seat to accomodate gear (ergo- the long storage OEM rack concept).
Larry have you thought about a ceiling weapon mount for the shotgun? This way it's out of view of anyone looking inside the vehicle and out of the way from your passengers. I'm sure you have already thought about it, but just to make sure to cover all the bases.

That was my very FIRST thought, but I haven't found a rack that does that SECURELY without drilling holes through the roof of the FJ. Holes in the roof might be something I'd do to my FJ at 250,000 miles, but I just don't have the stones to do it at 15,000 miles. If you have any suggestions, by all means, let me know.
One thing I have been toying with is a a rack much like the Springtail M-PAC Rack that would attach securely to the rear seat. If I could get that set up, I'd mount the shotgun HIGH on that rack away from the passengers, out of sight and convenient. It would also allow me to stack gear to the roof in the back without having it slide forward (and I could put MOLLE mounted gear bags on both sides of the rack for more efficient storage. Doc is working on getting his current product out, but when he's settled down there I'll ping on him -- unless you want to design the Shadow Mount 3 (I think we're up to 3 now ).

Check out FJOllie's set up in the cargo area. He has modified a dog barrier for very similar purposes to what you are talking about. Separates the cargo area from the rear seats and adds some more functional mounting points.

I bought a Stebel Nautilus Compact Air Horn (commonly used by motorcycles) to replace the OEM horn because when I honk, I don't think anyone hears. The Toyota horn is impossibly polite. Polite doesn't hack it when I want to get somebody's attention.
WRIGMAN has this horn on his FJ and on his BMW motorcycle and it was to my neighbor and friend WRIGMAN that I went to for help on this modification installation.
Side by side comparison between OEM and Stebel horns
Wrigman expresses an opinon of the effectiveness of the OEM horn.
Uphill wiring the relay into the battery and threading wire into the conduit.
Wrigman installing the horn.
The Stebel Nautilus Compact Air Horn is installed and more importantly, it works. (thanks for your help Wrigman!!)

THAT is the sound. Much better than the timid Toyota beep.
Dominic, learning from your experience, I gooped the retaining bolt with loctite and Wrigman slapped a tiestrap around it so that should the bolt work its way loose, it will not drop off.
