Re: Do this for our Troops

One thing I forgot to add... Some sites are also blocked because they may contain viruses, or bad links that open viruses. These are government computers that we are using. They are not in any way violating our rights. If I were to lend a complete stranger my computer, you're damn right I'm going to put some restrictions on it. They're not trying to keep us from looking at what we want to look at, they're trying to protect they're own computers. Unfortunately, in order for them to do that, we are restricted in what we are allowed to view.

Intresting, don't remember hearig about this. After reading Starbucks response to the Marine sounds like they are doing the bare minimum to show support. For a company that is very image conscious, this just doesn't look good for them

They should a note from Tim Hortons and see what they have done for the Canadian troops.

Re: Do this for our Troops

have you guys ever tried DemonProxy - Unblock MySpace ** ?? or the like? you just enter the URL of what you want and it gets you there. might be time consuming just for one picture though.

it does a good job getting past blockers/filters.. especially when i was in school. but i don't know how the military internet system works..

** it doesn't only unblock myspace, that sits just does it best.

Re: Do this for our Troops

We block a lot of sites in the field for a couple reasons: network integrity and bandwidth utilization. Last time I was running comms for a deployed unit we didn't block sites, everything was blocked that didn't have a .mil address and we just limited what .com sites could be used. The list was pretty small, basic news, education, etc.

What is a good site for hosting pictures then? I have photobucket, but will gladly go to anything that they can view.

NO, its about professional and appropriate use of a government computer asset. I'm sure most corporations don't want their employees surfing porn while using a corporate asset and at work. And it also has alot to do with safeguarding goverment computer networks against posssible viruses.
The analogy doesn't hold up.

MOST corporations don't keep their employees 'in the office' for a year
or more at a time, away from family, friends, and the other things which
keep one sane. MOST corporations let their employees go home after
they finish their shift. So long as we're talking about MOST corporations...

Morale and recreation are 'professional and appropriate use of a
government computer asset.'

In practice, there probably should be two networks, with tactical and
personal traffic entirely segregated and firewalled off from one another.

Both networks, however, should have the best antivirus screening, etc.,
that money can buy. Which is really very good.

Re: Do this for our Troops

I would love to see the purchase of millions in com equipment and computers so we can surf the internet, but I don't see that going over too well with the tax paying public.
