Jason told me to look at the axle and wheels from a distance and look for misalignments.
From the picture it's hard to say if the passenger side wheel is cambered inward at the top. Doesn't really look like it, but I'm sure Jason will be able to tell once he gets it in the shop. Are your rear tires wearing evenly? Is the tread on the inside of the tire wearing more then the outside?
If it crunched and hopped going onto the trailer it *sounds* like you're missing teeth off one/both of the gears. If a bearing was completely seized, it would most likely just drag the rear end. If a bearing was spun, it *should* still roll normally, it just wouldn't move under power.
I'll be interested to hear the answer from Jason.

Do you need a ladder, so you can get the **** over it?
Todd you have broken 3 teeth clean off your pinion. The pinion bearing seems to be functioning fine it spins and I can see no wear on it. The ring gear has little chips all over it but unlike last time this was a clean break.
I took it too Steve at Diff works, he said it's a clean break which is usually the result of spinning tires coming to a stop sudden stop, much like getting air then hitting the ground and something has to give with those big tires and all that power. If it had broke on the edge of the gear or something like that it could have possibly been the bearing walking out, but it's a clean break all the way across. It may have happen weeks ago and just not let go completely.
Bottom line is for the power you are running you need a bigger rear axle. Or drive around it.
The good news is I should have it back by Friday and have you up and running for the weekend or early next week. I told him to replace all the bearings and to use a solid space this time in place of the crush sleeve.
Lets hope the next set will get you through till the new axle housing can be installed. And Jason if I am on the trail with him I will try to help him take it easy unlike last time.

Oh that is such a load of mule muffins. Everyone knows I drive like a grandma. The only air I get is rolling down the window. And the whooshing of vacuum out of my bank account.
Yeah, "take it easy"... well nobody else does and they don't break 2 sets of gears. After Jeshua drove it up the hill at Borrego I knew it sounded funny.
This was all planned just to get me to move back in to Demello's because they can't live without me.
Next you guys will say that it's because I painted it metallic blue.

Haaaaa, at lest I got it up the hill.
You can drive mine again if you want, and if you ever need an FJ fix while under the knife just give me a call and I'll come on out and let you drive around the parking lot at the house of DeMello.
