Just wondering if anyone has tried the Indiana dunes or the dunes in Michigan near Silver Sands or Mears?
If so how did was it. I have heard it is a blast.
silver lake is a blast, i lived in whitehall (about 45 minutes away) until 3 years ago. highly recommended. to get into the ORV area you'll need an ORV sticker (15-20 for a year) and a day or annual vehicle state part pass (not sure the price of a daily, i think annual is up to $26 now). well worth it though.

Take the time to learn the voucher system and enjoy this fine area of our great state. Weekdays are obviously best; as this is the only sand in the upper midwest and much farther yet. Good Mexican restaurant in Hart; great bike trail from Hart to Shelby (very scenic area in general) and a Lake Michigan lighthouse right on the public beach (rare) just a few minutes south.
State park right there w/camping and decent rentals in the area if you take the time to look.

Come to Michigan......we need your money and bad.
I'm in Granger IN, where should I go for more information on this? Is there a site that has directions and prices that you know of? I would love to get my FJ off of the pavement at some point, and I think my sons would love this.
The Official DNR Website is a good place to start. like kzoo mentioned, weekdays are best; and for god's sake dont even try to show up on a big holiday (memorial day, labor day and independence day are all really crazy). the voucher system is basically like taking a number. when you show up at the reg. shack in the morning they assign you a timeframe for entry, like 12-2 pm, for example. there is no time limit so you dont have to leave at a certain time... they use the voucher system to keep the lines to get in manageable. there is a campground on the state park as well, i think it runs about $10 a night? im not sure to be honest, i havent been camping in michigan for probably 10 years. its not a bad idea to pack in extra fuel and food if you plan on staying the entire weekend, silver lake is kinda in the boonies so goods and services come at a bit of a premium.

I Would love to go but I am going to the Hoosier Hoedown to check out the trail team. And I am still in my LR3, haven't made the jump to my own FJ yet.
Totally disagree. Weekdays there aren't many vehicles out there and checking out the other rigs is half the fun. Plus there's more to do with more rigs out there, like watching recoveries and heading to the drag strip.
To each his own; agreed; yet the fact that there aren't near as many vehicles present to contend with coupled with the extremely restrictive voucher system being waived on weekdays during the summer and most of the time (now) after Labor Day....just might possibly allow some of the first-timers being addressed here a much more enjoyable or laid-back experience.
Some folks go to be, be seen and take the madness in...others seek to simply drive onto the dunes at their liesure while worrying less about their kids getting run over in the process.(think one relatively small dune with no other peer in the upper midwest and beyond playing host to every enthusiast in that vast region with a buck fifty in their back pocket...).
