Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

Hey everyone

Issue came up today after our huge '2010 blizzard' here in Nashville...omg 6 inches shuts down the town. But anyway.

I went out today and went to leave, had some snow and ice on the windshield, it looked powdery so I hit the wipers. It was hard as ice, blades got about halfway up and hit the ice and stopped. So I then turned them off but of course they are stuck up since they didnt go though a full sweet. Get out knock the 2 inches of ice away and clear them well. Get in and hit them so they would return to bottom. Well they didnt zero to bottom.

Symptoms are, doesnt return to zero when you turn switch to off. Intermittent does not work either. Slow and Fast work. Rear wiper works. Wash works but wipers do not zero to bottom when they 'stop'. When you put them on intermittent they barely try to pause at the bottom just like a studder.

So my thought is the wiper relay burnt up or something. Any other hints? and then where is the relay at? Im not seeing it jump out at me on the service manual pdf. Maybe Im just over looking it.

Any tips/thoughts/help? Rather fix it than take it to the dealer, but thats just the hard head in me....

I don't have a mechanical drawing handy... but it sounds like a shaft has rotated in one of the arms... you could have a shaft turning, but the clamped on arm is not moving with it (stripped)... Just a guess... I had a bad Wiper arm in my 4R... there was a rubber mounted joint that separated... had to buy the whole mechanism... it was real easy to change (20 minutes)... Can you get into the motor and actuation arm area to take a look when you operate it?

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

Hmm, Good thought. All 3 move at the same time and in unison, and looks like full sweeps by all. But It could be that. Never thought about it. Ill see if i can get a chance to pull the arms off or whatever.

This is the FIRST thing im going to have to fix on the FJ since getting it in November. Short period... I thought Id at least put the first mod on first before something going back but oh well.

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

Well this morning they worked on intermit for a little while this morning. Then eventually it stopped working on intermit and just acted like they wanted to pause at the bottom then kept going. Im still on the hunch that its the relay box that is the problem.

I get full motion. So like when you wash the windows, they stop where ever they want...not returning to zero. so really really thinking relay... had everything at work fall apart this morning so no chance to mess with it today....maybe tomorrow

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

I guess the "Blizzard of 2010" claims another victim. Same problem here. I live in NC and we also got hit. Went out to clear off FJ and turned on the wipers with snow on the windshield. They went up about half way and stopped. Now intermittent does not work and they will not return to home position automatically. Low and high still work.

I checked the fuse and it is good but also cannot locate the wiper relay. Is there a wiper relay on the FJ? Someone please help us!!

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

Ok, here's the deal. It is the wiper relay that has burned up. Unfortunately, it is located on the circuit board of the wiper multiswitch on the steering column. What a stupid place to put that relay. Did Toyota think that no one would ever need to replace it. I researched the relay a bit a found another strange fact. Panasonic makes the relay and there are two versions of it, one is a wiper load rated relay and the other is not. Strangely enough, Toyota used the non wiper-load rated relay. Shame on you Toyota.

Anyway, I had a similar 12v relay in the parts pile and I wired it into the multiswitch for testing before I ordered anything. Everything worked so I can go ahead and order a replacement relay and fix this problem. But wait, instead of resoldering another relay to the circuit board, why not locate it somewhere easier to get to like the kick panel or under the hood. So, I think that is what I am going to do. That also means that I can just run down to the local parts store and get a 12V 30A relay and not have to order an exact replacement to fit on the circuit board.

If you want to order an exact replacement, I found them on mouser dot com. Search for cq1-12v.

Hope this helps.

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

Just realized that the last post was a year old. We did just have another bad snow here so what a coincidence!! I am going to use the fact that it is 4am as my excuse.

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

Well old thread bumped again. Good to know that its the switch on the column....which sucks too. Considering a replacement is around 400. And that replacing that thing isnt the easiest thing in the world. Gota start looking for other options like what you did. We will see. Thanks for the update tho. Im still dealing with it...

Re: Windshield wiper intermittent and return to zero issues

This guy had the same problem on his Sienna. The relay that controlled the intermit was on the wiper motor rather than the combination switch in his case.
