Question Alt. Problems

So I was doing some fording/mudding this weekend and now have a wonderful high pitch noise. It gets louder as I go higher in RPM's and sounds like the FJ is 30yrs old
Anyway, from all the searching I have done it seems I have damaged my Alternator. I am going to take it in to get fixed but I am really wandering if there is any type of alt. that would be better "mud/watter" suited. I saw a thread saying FJ's have one of the best alt's ever made. Just thought I would ask though. Thanks!!

Re: Alt. Problems

Homedadr is our expert vehicle thrasher so he knows more than I do about this stuff, but the noise could also mean you've gotten water in your rear differential, and need to drain and refill it with diff fluid.

Thanks for the info, I just though it could be the alt. by the way it sounds. Is there any type of upgrade for the pulleys to make them more mud/wter friendly?

I just did the rear diff. last weekend. The breather for the front diff is up in the engine bay, so I thought I didn't have to worry about getting that contaminated?

After I came back from Ouray, I started to get a kinda loud "motor" noise in the engine compartment when turning the steering wheel. Took it to the dealer and they didn't find anything. I still have this sound specially when I turn and back out from my garage. It doesn't matter if it's at cold start or not.
I figure I might have to take it to another service department/dealer.

Didn't realize you'd done the Rear Diff Mod already, my bad, please disregard my previous Post.

Re: Alt. Problems

I would call it more of a whine than anything....

yep, there's a good # of us that now have the sound, post Ouray (water crossings).

There is a thread already going on this. You might have some luck there. Ours has quieted some after we took it in for maintenance, but its not entirely gone. The guy who washed it at the dealership put it on a lift and sprayed out the undercarriage really well--LOTS of mud came out. Might want to give her a really good spray and see if it helps. We're pretty sure we'll be replacing pulleys soon.

Worth the read, here ya go:
weird whine?

good luck!

All the way in Virginia....and I'm still the thrasher.....Damn.....the rear diff noise won't change with rpm...only speed....the alt. is one of the best stockers I've seen...anyone burn one up yet??? no..they didn't.....clean the belts and pullies with 2 million gallons at the car wash...high preasure...if that doesn't work then it's too late and you need some pullies....Toyota has plenty of them in stock...they changed out mine twice and never had it longer then 5 hours to do it....again..good luck...Kurt
