wow, there's been like a million threads on this subject and so far I've seen no solid proof either way, you will however save money on air filters since the cai one is reuseable. plus it sounds cool

I will check around looking for anything that will improve gas MPG

Re: Cold Air box save MPG?

Lol, I got about 17 mpg out of about 16 gallons of gas. This is just an estimate because I didn't run my FJ until the fuel light came on. It's only 4 days on, so this is to be expected. My very first car was a 1995 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 and I got about 12 MPG if i was lucky, lol and that was 4, almost 5 years ago. The only "downside" to the FJ I see is the gas mileage but you're driving around a mini tank. The 17mpg I got was with no jack-rabbit starts or full-throttle accelleration at all, probably call it grandpa driving if you will. For the consistent reliability, safety, and now oh sh!t factor (w/ the FJ of course :P), I'm willing to pay a little more at the pump. Of course I'll probably be the one with 14MPG b/c of the CAI and exhaust I want to get, lol. Think of it this way, you only live your life once, so you have to make some sacrifices. In this case, maybe say 15MPG over a hybrid car. IMO, it's not economical to purchase a hybrid vehicle right now as there are cars that get close to 30mpg city and well over that hwy. We can't have it all, at least yet . One other suggestion, you could always buy yourself a rollback and tow the FJ all over to show it off, heh.

Re: Cold Air box save MPG?

CAI is not going to increase your gas mileage. The whole point of CAI is increased horse power.

Normal driving you probably wont know a difference but the CAI system is intended to get colder denser air into the cylinders and the computer is going to attempt to maintain that 16:1 Air/Fuel ratio. In other words it will be adding more gas! You can make the argument of more power means less gas required but that just doesn't fit the physics.

The only way to increase your gas mileage is to burn less of it. There are very few ways to do that. You can make the engine more efficient by removing as much drag/friction on the internal parts as possible. That means things like roller cams, reduce mechanical fans or pulleys (electric fan, water pump and loose the AC), synthetic oils (much higher anti-friction coefficient), keep the engine at optimum temperature - not to hot - not to cold.

The only other thing you can do is use a smaller engine or do something like adding hydrogen, natural gas or propane to the mixture.

Keep in mind all of the so called gas saving gimmicks are exactly that - gimmicks.
