Fire Extinguisher Info

I HAD a cheap, disposable $16 AUTO/MARINE Kidde F.E. that I discharged Saturday helping a poor Jeep owner with an engine fire. After it squirt for about 8 seconds, it was out of gooey-powder and the fire raged on as we all helplessly watched his machine go up in flames (didn't have my cam but it DOUBLE sucked 'cause the guy was pulled up right next to a fire hydrant).

I ordered two of these to replace them (the 2.5 lb dry extinguisher-Halon is WAY too expensive):

What extinguishers are some of the more experienced FJ owners using and where are you mounting them. Most threads seem to be using the cheap gear...

Re: Fire Extinguisher Info

FYI-I had mine in the rear but couldn't access easily because I had my Thule bike rack mounted and it slowed me down. The best place seems to be near the feet of the rear passenger seat, but I want to figure an alternative if possible.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Info

I gave up looking around and just mounted a wimpy 2.5lb kidde as well. I have been in your situation and it sucks. I am looking for a local fire extinguisher shop to get two 5lb models.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Info

I think the extinguisher I ordered is a little too big for that location.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Info

Anyone else using any "professional grade" extinguishers?

I sure found out how relatively useless those little cheap extinguishers are this past weekend.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Info

I have a 3lb from NAPA, had to use one of them before when a race car caught fire at work because of a welding accident... but I was quick with the response so I dont know how it will do when a fire had a minute to get some air...
At the same work we had 10lb for the race track, had to use one of them too, now they work let me tell ya, it will cover the entire car in foam but I think its like 60 or 80 bucks and they are big... like a scuba tank... I know that NAPA has them, you just got to ask for them...

Re: Fire Extinguisher Info

I carry the Kidde 3A40BC 5lb fire extinguisher. If you are serious about putting out a fire in a rural location with no immediate fire department response likely, then a 5lb fire extinguisher is the bare minimum. Carrying two would be more helpful. The smaller ones are barely adequate to put out a cigarette. I know they are big and bulky and heavy, but if your goal is to extinguish a fire rather than just being able to put a check mark in the box for safety equipment that you carry, then you need larger fire extinguishers.

Mine is attached with a large "QuickFist."
