That white molding above the windshield

That white piece of molding above the windshield that everyone says needs to be replaced when the windshield is replaced did not have to be replaced when I had my windshield replaced at the dealer this morning. I'm not sure I said 'replaced' enough in that sentence.

Anyway, I was skeptical when the service manager told me they wouldn't have to replace it, but he was right, and they didn't.

Re: That white molding above the windshield

Normally, they do not replace this molding, but as the FJ was new and some glass shops had not worked on them before, they were damaging the moldings when removing the windshield. As the FJ becomes more known to the glass industry, hopefully, this molding will not be damaged when the glass is replaced.

Re: That white molding above the windshield

When my windshield was replaced, (crack caused by dealership), they made sure the molding piece was replaced...............virtually impossible to R&R the windshield without some type of damage to unreplaceable clips and sealant. Hope your replacement doesn't leak.

This is from 1st hand experience...............and from a dealer that I didn't buy the car from...........they were thorough. I suppose it can be done, but here in Orygun with the rain, ya just don't take chances.

Re: That white molding above the windshield

Pretty rainy here too (not compared to you, of course). I discussed this with the service manager, and he said that the seals and stoppers were all replaced, but that there is no reason to replace the white body moulding if you don't trash it.

They did a leak test, so hopefully I won't have any further issues.

Re: That white molding above the windshield

Hey Mark, How much did run to replace the windshield at the dealer? Got my first star chip and the glass guy's repair filled most of the cracks but still shows 2 small cracks. He told me he replaced a few FJC windshields and was able to save the molding when I asked him about having to replace the white molding on top. So windshield replacement is definately in my future.

They did it under warranty RomaBoy, to repair a leak at the top, so I really don't know what the windshield costs. It cost them two, though, because the first one the dealer ordered arrived cracked.

I also have not had any further leaking of the windshield, so I think I can confirm that the white moulding strip does not need to be replaced unless the installer screws up.

Re: That white molding above the windshield

They did reuse that trim piece on my wife's FJ when they had the windshield off for body work (LOOOONNNNGG story). They did a great job putting everything back. Then on her first trip out of town that trim piece blew off on the highway. She pulled off and ran back and saved it. And they glued it on again. Stayed ok the second time.

Re: That white molding above the windshield

I just had mine replaced and they reused the molding. They said they spent an extra 45 minutes removing it carefully. When you press down on either ends does the molding move a little bit? I also hear a little wind on the highway and can't remember if this is normal or not?

Thanks for any input.
