I Was Just Wondering Why You Need Atrac If You Have Rear Locker?
It Cant Function With Locker On, Right? In My Understanding The Atrac Applies Brake To Spinning Wheel To Force Power To Non Spinning Wheel, But With Locker Engaged Aren't Both Wheels Spinning At Exactly Same Speed? Another Question About Rear Locker What Does Light Do When Locker Is Engaged? Thank You In Advance.

ATRAC works on both axles and corrects any wheel that is slipping. The rear locker makes ATRAC unnecessary for the rear wheels. In the first 50,000 FJ Cruisers produced ATRAC worked when the rear locker wasn't engaged and vica versa, now both work together.

thank you very much. i dont have atrac on mine. i bought it in apr. 06 so buying the switch would not be worth it, right? because it will have no effect on front end when rear is locked.

I did the hack...have the older model....from what I understand and from practice.....a-trac seems to be a front wheels only deal.....locker,rear wheels only....with both..you have a locked rear and trac up front to keep the fronts from spinning yet have the ability to turn much better then if the front would be locked...I'm not sure of the exacts but with both on there isn't much that will stop this thing....Kurt

actually, that is backward, you need to get the switch and do the A Hack
the rear locker is nice, use it a lot, but atrack is nice also, and with them both working in conjunction these rigs rule. I have both ends of my Jeep locked, and run the a hack in My FJC, I love them both.

Highbeams is right on! Using them in conjunction provides really superior traction. The front locker has the advantage in rock-crawling but on other general trail use, the A-TRAC/Rear Locker set up is very effective.
Does the overall system negate the need for more aggressive tires, such as mud tires? Am I looking at this right, being old fashioned, I don't know.
In 2 or 4 high all the electronic trac, abs, etc are working and we can't spin our tires. In 4-low, with a-trac off we can spin. But there are many times, with mud, when we used to keep it in 4-high, locked, and we would power through mud. The mud tires purpose was to self clean by spinning and to dig down to a more stable footing. Same for certain sand and snow situations.
I have my ford supercrew and it is my hunting truck. It has been through the worst gumbo mud and clay, plus melting snow which is messy mud. Without the spinning ability and old fashioned tricks, walking the front tires, using berms etc we would be stuck.
Hence, do the mud tires help on the FJ? Maybe in 4-low no a-trac? I must admit, I am hitting the trails with the FJ and it does great, but I am having to learn new approaches to certain situations. Such as trying to power through situations in 4-high and having the truck cut power and brake. Also using a-trac takes getting used to the noise. It does seem to work.
Your thoughts are appreciated ,
Regards, SSC

I went over a steep hill and got high-centered and had all wheels spinning just barely hitting the ground. A buddy came around the back to pull me off the hill.
After about a minute I realized I had the rear locker on but not the A-Trac. I had pushed the wrong button.
I pushed the A-Trac button and whamo, my tires caught and the FJC climbed all the way over.
