MT: Hack the full-time 4wd to 2wd???

The manual tranny fjs are full time 4wd. And the mileage numbers on the auto are better than the manual because they run on 2wd unless you switch it on.

so....

since these cars have electronic traction control...does anyone think the ecu can be fooled or hacked into thinking the front wheels are losing traction and turn off the power driven to the front wheels?

Nissan skylines are able to do this via a switch. but the previous generations of the nissan skyline (r32 i believe) were hacked so they could do front wheel burn outs and then rear wheel burn outs at the strip.

i'd love to save some gas and feel what it'd be like to drive a 6spd rwd fj.

input??

I have no idea. I dont see how this would work. Seems to me that it is all mechanical and no electronics on top of it will cause You to be able to overcome overide the basic design of the system.

Nope, i have no idea.

Re: MT: Hack the full-time 4wd to 2wd???

The center diff on the MT6 is a mechanical torsen diff. If I understand it, these don't allow electronic control. The HL and LL are a mechanical means to close up the torsen, not electronic.

The skylines may be using clutchpacks with electrnically controlled lock-ups via a fluid that changes viscosity based on the current applied to it.

Call up Allpro, and reagear your FJ, then trow in an ARB up front, along with an inchworm Tcase. You will no longer have full time 4 wheel drive, and will have rear wheel drive only until you shift the transfer case over.

Thats the only "Hack" for this bone that I know of.

Re: MT: Hack the full-time 4wd to 2wd???

yes, there is no way to disable the full time 4wd without major mechanical work.

The mileage hit comes only partly from running in 4wd all the time.

Other factors are from the higher final ratio of the diffs in the MT model, plus the fact that the AT is software controlled and that software is probably intelligent enough to optimize shift points for better mileage.

I'm the opposite: most of my cars have been manuals, but I bought an auto FJ specifically because I didn't want full-time 4WD.

Re: MT: Hack the full-time 4wd to 2wd???

I've always had part time 4WD SUV's and hated the fact that you had to be in 4WD Locked, i.e HL to get into 4WD. A lot of time the road gets slick and your'e not aware of it, or the other way around, the tractions really good and you think you need to be in HL, causing unnecessary wear and tear. Then you have highways where there's ice off and on. I used to drive with on hand on the little lever on the highway, and hated it.

I'm more than happy to give away 2 mpg for the permanent torsen 4WD. I would squeal the rear wheels if I wasn't paying attention with the pathfinder and piss off the wife. I don't have to worry about that anymore. Its just so much more stable overall.

Re: MT: Hack the full-time 4wd to 2wd???

Some of the mpg difference has to do with how you shift. I wanted manual enough to put up with it. But it would have been nice if, like my Tacoma, you had the option of 2 or 4WD.
