Vented Hood Scoop

After posting to the Engine cover question, I've been asked by lots of people for pictures on how I vented the stock hood. As I said before this Mod is intended to allow heat to escape and not be a Supra style ram air inlet. In addition to this I have removed the engine cover and observed about a 30 deg F temp drop when crawling in Az in 115 deg ambient.
The jop is pertty straight forward. You will need a steady hand to cut the Plastic after removing the Fake grill. After that Mark all the holes and drill out using a 1'' Unibit and spray paint black. These holes will lead into pocket, I chose to drill out the back side too and touch up w/ Toyota touch up paint. Lastly, Form your mesh on a bench, cut corners for a boxed edge, and bond to plastic using Permatex sillicone. This is a cheap mod and way easier than posting pictures on a forum.

Savin' up for an 8 track I saw on E bay.

Re: Vented Hood Scoop

Have you driven in any heavy rain with it cut out. I am interested in where the water going through the scoop ends up.

Re: Vented Hood Scoop

i don't think he's using it as a air scoop . it just lest more air come into the engine compartment to cool the engine . so water from rain will just keep things cooler.

Re: Vented Hood Scoop

If you look under your hood you'll see the pocketed area I spoke of. There really isn't a direct shot thru the hood.I chose to drill out the back side too. But yes, I have gone thur heavy rain and I'm assuming the water ends up doing the same thing as the rest of the rain after it exits the radiator shroud and gets blasted by the fan blades. No harm done.

Re: Vented Hood Scoop

No- No change in wind noise.

The Mesh is from a company called McNICHOLS CO. McNICHOLS offers a full line of metal and fiberglass products primarily with holes in them. Products include perforated metal, grating, flooring, wire mesh, expanded metal, structural shapes, stair treads, ladder rungs, handrail components, trench dr

It's Perforated steel. and comes in a variety of sizes. I used:
1/4'' hex on 9/32 staggered centers 22 gauge galvanized.

22 gauge is easy to form so you wouldn't need to have a fab shop bend it for you. This is a really easy job if you're good with your hands. The hood piece comes off so you can do all the detail work on a bench. And if all goes wrong, and you ruin the piece. you can always buy a new one and bolt it back on. Good luck

Re: Vented Hood Scoop

I highly recommend this mod. Probably the cheapest and biggest HP gain available.

I got a similar temp drop and a very noticeable power increase. Can't tell you about MPG.

As MudLoving has said before, we can expect over 1 HP per degree. That's a lot folks.
