Rear license plate question

This quite possibly might be the smallest problem of all time but I am going to ask it anyway....

When I close my rear door, the $&@^$* license plate rattles like a mofo. It drives me INSANE!!! Toyota didn't put two simple little screw holes for the bottom of the license plate so it sounds like someone throwing tin cans at a wall. Please, please help me.....

Re: Rear license plate question

The dealer included some foam/rubber strips with double-sided tape in the owner's manual case...I don't know if all dealers do this, but you should be able to find some at the auto parts or home improvement store. Peel off the backing, apply to the bottom of the license plate and the noise should stop (or at least be muffled).

Re: Rear license plate question

Yeah, there should be some foam strips in the glove box for the rear plate (instructions included)....while you're in the glove box, there are also two extra clips for the front mats to stop them from slipping around.

Re: Rear license plate question

Get some weatherstripping stuff that is basically a foam strip with a sticky tape backing. It's cheap and you can find it at any hardware store or Home Depot. Stick some to the lower back edge of the plate as a cushion. My FJ came with the stuff smurfyFJ mentioned above, but I used that on the front plate to protect the bumper cover. I bought a cheap plastic frame for the rear plate and it is rigid enough to prevent the plate rattle.

Re: Rear license plate question

mine made so much noise. i have a frame that has a slot in it for the bottom of the plate. so the plate sits in the frame and them screws onto the car. that helps, but it was making a lot of noise along with the door and spare tire carrier with the stereo, so while i was dynamatting the rear door, i di the back of the plate. it may weigh 3 pounds now, but silent as can be.

Re: Rear license plate question

I have a rattle/buzz coming from that area (right rear) on certain surfaces/speeds, etc. I'm thinking it is a tire tread problem, but it could be the plate. I have the foam strip for the front (thank god we don't have to have a front plate) so I'll try that. Ron

Re: Rear license plate question

The fix is totally simple. Order a custom black liscense frame that says, "Hummer" on the top and "Rescue Team" on the bottom. Bolt that up real tight and the added surface area will snug the plate comfortabley to your FJ and stop the rattle.
If it is totally pissing you off!!!!!!!! take your plate off and super glue some rubber gasket material on the bottom edge. "Done!"
I actually did this myself when I altered the plate mounts on my "Hunter Trucks" Bull Bar. If anyone reads this and is thinking about getting one or has one. Don't run the tag in the stock location because it becomes the leading 'low' point. ----to remidy this---- take the plate off and bend the stock mounts backwards about 20 degrees. Then put your plate flush to the crossbar and and mark the holes. (they will be about 1/3" higher than the stock holes) Drill'm out and use some self tapping screws to mount it. ((Use my gasket trick.))) After this is done. The new leading 'low' edge is 1/4" of Bull bar : )
