Question What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

I picked up a screw driver in the corner of my tire! Took it to the Les Schwab and they said they could not fix it due to the location the patch would not hold. They would not plug it so I did. It is holding air no problem....what should I watch out for if anything? Is there a higher chance of a blow out now. I don't really want to buy and new $250 295 Toyo MT!

Re: What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

I've done it PLENTY of times to all the cars that I've owned. It's always worked fine for me. I think it's a liabitilty issue for them. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Re: What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

It will probably be ok aslong as it is not past the tread section as it rolls over towards the side wall. In any case I would rotate the tire to the rear. May I suggest buying a tire with Road Hazard Warrenty. LesShwab sells a Wild Country RVT mud tire that chews just as good as the Toyo and is way less expensive, plus it has free road hazard. So for a minimal expense the tire would have been replaced.

I have been using plugs for many years. Just make sure you trim the left over plug off as close as you can to the face of the tire. I have never had any problems with plugs, I don't remember the last time I went to a shop to repair a tire. IMHO you'll be fine, good luck.

Re: What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

As the responders have said, it usually works fine. In any case, those that fail will do so very shortly after the repair. The biggest thing about plugs is that they can break a belt when installed. It happened to me one time and cost me $125 plus the plug! I prefer the inside patch whenever possible. Ron

Put on your spare if you are worried. I think you will be fine.

Re: What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

Cassidy, When you say corner of tire where exactly is that? Sounds like your hole is in that gray area where the tread ends and the sidewall begins. If it's in the side wall they were right not to fix it. If the hole is in the tread area where the tire touches the road then I'd say it can be repaired.

Re: What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

Plugs wear out when the steel belting eventually cuts through it.

I'm curious, how would a plug break a belt? I don't see the correlation...

Re: What are the draw backs to tire plugs?

Or if the tire has a different problem, i.e. leaking around the bead, and you try and take it to a tire shop to fix, they will not even fix the bead leak..... All because I had several plugs in the tire already.

Well so much for that shop. I bought new tires two weeks after that and I thought about buying the new tires from them, but that changed my mind...

I have been doing it for years.
