Computer reset after TRD exhaust/air filter install

I'm looking for any feedback on the reset of the FJ's computer after installing the TRD exhaust and air filter.
I seem to have what looks to be black soot along the lower edge of the exhaust pipe and it's looking a bit like a rich condition.
In all my previous vehicles running a free flowing exhaust like a Flomaster or TRD in My Lexus IS300 along with a K&N or TRD air filter the gas mileage increase was substantial, My FJ average, running premium with no AC and mixed driving is 17.5 MPG.

TRD exhaust/air filter/rock rails/roof rack/upgrade#2/side air bags/tow...basically fully loaded and 2100 miles so far.

The Only Way to reset the learned values, is to take it to the dealer and have them connect the Vetronix hand held tester and reset memory. unpluging the battery does not erase or RESET the vehicle's mapping, like in the OLD days! The new CAN- system ECUs learn...and can be adjusted.

Unplugging the ECU directly at the unit won't reset it ? Have you done this dealer reset to yours and whats your opinion on the black exhaust soot ?Thanks for the quick responce,

Nope, It kinda works like a Random Access Memory (RAM), it programs a specific chip in the ECU...There is a "TSB "for all makes of Toyotas on how to reset the learned values. Over a certain amount of drive cycles the vehicle learns your driving habits, and adjusts accordingly! I work for Toyota...and yes, for instance if I have a vehicle with a mis-shifting auto trans, that is about to fail....and I replace it with a new one, low and behold if you do not reset learned values it will run like the old transmission did! My FJ comes in on my Birthday! June 9th! Just around the corner. The wait has not been so bad since I get to work,Mod,play with these cars ALLday!

Oopps! I almost forgot! Do Not over-OIL your air filter as this will release some of the oil and contaminate the MAF meter (hotwire). some dust may bypass the filter and stick to the hot wire, eventually will set a lean code PO171, system lean and make you FJ run like cr_p! Easy to Fix! LOOK at the MAF hotwires, if it is dirty, clean with contact cleaner and let air dry!

Could this be the reason some of the guys with 285/70R17 tires are posting poor gas mileage? Poorer than would be expected by just the diameter difference alone. How does the vehicle handle two drivers: wife and husband if each drive about the same miles a month, but drive different styles?

Do you feel like it's even necessary to have the ECU reset at all or will the vehicle adjust as necessary over time as it get's a grip on the new high flow air filter and exhaust system and my driving habits ?

Believe it or not, it monitors inputs and records them....for instance throttle angle and percentages, braking times, hhmmm lets see....steerring input, brake psi, lateral forces, G'S etc...

Yes eventually it will adjust, but at the exspense of poor driving/mileage> A reset will start at square one!

Re: Computer reset after TRD exhaust/air filter install

Thanks for the oiling tip on the filter...didn't add any oil before installing and have always gone very light after cleaning on all other vehicles/MC's, always found light oiling on the TRD/K&N's works best.

If the condition you speak of ever occurs where is the wire you speak of located ?
