Rear end whine question

This is a 2007, 4D, auto tranny with 9200 miles. The truck has never been off road, mudding or rock climbing. 4 WD was used this winter on snow days and the low range feature (along with A-track and rear lock) was only engaged during a heavy snow just to see if and how it works. Works fine! My question is; is it normal for the rear end to whine about one second after letting up on the throttle at 65 to 70 MPH? It will whine down to about 60 to high 50s MPH then I cannot hear it any longer. Dealer will check it out tomorrow but it is nice to have other feedback before taking it in. Thanks

Mine whines too, but usually around 40-50 and its done it from day one. I have thought about taking it in but its not bad enough for me to waiste my day with. Let us know what the dealer says, I'd like to know.

Exactly what I am thinking but this is the same dealer who tried to sell me "key" insurance for FJ keys costing $200 to $250 dollars to replace. I did not buy the insurance but bought "access" keys fro Home Depot for .75 cents per item; that .75 cent key starts the FJ. Found out through this forum the 07 key is not microchipped.

Re: Rear end whine question

Took it in today and test drove with a mechanic who verified the whine. Tested a new sandstorm (60 Miles on odometer) and heard no noise under the same conditions. Changed differential fluid for naught. End result is a new differential has been ordered and will be installed under warantee.

Re: Rear end whine question

I have a 2007 with 16,045 miles and the rear diff has whined since new. Starts at exactly 63 mph, no lower and is more noticeable on deceleration than constant load. Changed the rear diff fluid to synthetic at 13,000 and that made only very slightly less noise but it has not caused any issues and is not getting louder. The fluid in the rear diff. at 13k wasn't bad at all. Grey color and just a fine smudge of particles on the magnet so I'm not too worried about it.

I think I might go and see if they will change mine too.
