Out of Balance off the lot...or normal shake?

Just picked up my new '08 4x4. Hit the freeway for the first time at 157 miles. When I hit 65 the steering wheel had a minor shake, as if the front wheels need a re-balance (could Toyota have screwed this up on the line). This is my first 4x4, no chance this is anything else right?

It's possible. Call the dealership and tell them about it so it's documented. And take it back in as soon as you can to have it checked and fixed. Do you get the shake in the steering wheel just at speed ? (65) or does the shake occur when you apply the brakes also. I'm thinking rotors here.

This is common and almost always due to poor balancing. Better tires should also help. Do you have Bridgestone, Dunlop, or something else?

Just around 65 (a little before and a little after). 70 is silky smooth. No shaking when braking at any speed (other than through the 65 MPH zone). Sucks that I have to go to Toyota so soon and chance the scratched rim, door, and grease all over the handles!!!!

Re: Out of Balance off the lot...or normal shake?

Maybe you could by-pass Toyota and take it to a tire shop and have them check the balance. I know taking it to Toyota means no $$ outlay and a tire shop does. I'm thinking like why have a roofer install new windows in your house. Does that make any sense ?? Just a thought. But you could still get the scratched rim, door, and grease all over the handles!!!!

Re: Out of Balance off the lot...or normal shake?

your right, maybe a trip to discount tire would yield the best results since they do it all day! they usually don't charge me since I shop there a lot, and a $20 spot always puts a smile on there face since its not common.

Thanks for the your words!

I have spent 15 hours plus ready threads. this is the first forum, of any type, I have every looked at, and this was my first post. I'm pretty impressed! I do have OCD so the whole "when do you first change your oil" thing has me pretty messed up with wanting to do it right and all!!! Although my OCD will not allow my FJ to ever see off road (since it might get dirty or scratch on it) I plan to do many mods and will definitely turn to you all for some info!

signing off 1 AM....just finished wax coat number 3

Re: Out of Balance off the lot...or normal shake?

I left the dealership with the "shakes" last Friday (2 miles on clock), on the way to NC, stopped at local tire dealer and paid $36 to have the BFGs balanced. Still vibrating at 60mph +- a couple. Upon my return with 1000K on clock I took back to dealer where upon they put their best tech and road force machine to work on the problem. several hours later he had the shake out but the tires were so far out of spec that they ordered 4 new ones under warranty. Go back to dealer yesterday for the install and the new BFGs were worse than the ones they were to replace, could not balance!!
After talking with Toyota it was decided to change brands and put a set of 5 Michelin LTX A/T 2s on. Going to pick it up later this am and hoping the issue is resolved. BTW, the dealer tech measured the TRD wheels to see if they were round and found them to be ok.
When watching the BFG spin on the machine you can see the lumpiness and watch it hop. Why this occurs at 58 to 62 or so is beyond my simple mind.
I have a neighbor that just put a set of the BFG ats on a wrangler in size 33" and has no problem at all, go figure. The tech at dealer thinks the rack and pinion on the FJ is too sensitive for the BFGs.

will post after I get it on the road with the Michelin tires.
