Cabin filter change.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I just changed out my cabin filter, and it was extremely dirty. I've had my FJ for about 14 months, and put 12,500 miles on it. I use my FJ daily, and I don't consider my use severe, really not in dusty conditions. I was doing an oil, and filter change, engine air filter, wipers, and figured I'd do the cabin filter aswell. I never would have thought it would be that dirty! It was worse then the engine air filter. To change it out was very easy. Just remove your glove box, and the filter is directly behind it in a white housing. 2 tabs have to be pushed in and the filter pulls out. I would suggest this being changed once a year. It might have been posted before but I think its a good reminder.

Re: Cabin filter change.

I have had mine for a couple months now and pulled out the filter yesterday and it is already dirty. I think one problem is that it is horizontal and stuff just falls in on top of it.

Re: Cabin filter change.

Every oil change I just pull it out and knock as much stuff off it as I can. It does do it's job and it's easy enough to get to.

Re: Cabin filter change.

I just cleaned mine today for the second time in 27K miles. It was fairly dirty, the filter is really thin, almost like tissue and it really should not cost more than $1 or $2. The filter material can easily be removed from the housing, I think I'll cut up a furnace filter I have laying around and use that, I can probably get 10 replacements for under $10 with that.

I remove mine every month or so and vacuum it. I also cut up furnace filters to use as cabin filters. I get a lot of teasing at the Priuschat forum for doing this, but I'm a cheap bastard

I use the Canadian Tire "Supreme" furnace filter. As no actual employee of the doofus Canadian Tire chain actually touches my vehicle, that is ok. The Supreme filter is rated MERV 12 and has a carbon charcoal prefilter

The filter costs $20 and I can easily get six cabin filters out of it. The Prius and FJ cabin filter are close enough in size

Re: Cabin filter change.

As I run in the desert all the time, I clean mine after every run. And it always needs it. When in dust, the recirc is always on so all air passes through it all the time.

Re: Cabin filter change.

I don't think I'm rolling in cash, but I actually swap out the filter after every desert run (or so). The air smells cleaner and there is particulate that remains when you knock it out or vacuum it.

It needs attention even if you're doing city driving because it gets dirty.
