Wiring Help- Back-up Lights

Hi Gang, I could really use some help from any of the electronic wizards out there. I recently purchased some aux back-up lights from Cabelas and now I have a question or two regarding wiring.

First, the kit includes a relay but the instructions make no mention of where it needs to be mounted. I'm sure this is a stupid question but are these relays weatherproof, ie-can it be mounted under the chassis somewhere or does it need to stay dry. I have attached a pic of the relay if it helps. Where would a good location be?

Second, the kit gives you 3 options for providing power to the light. Rather than try to explain the instructions, I attached photos of them.

Ultimately, what I would like to do is have the lights come on when I put the vehicle in reverse, but I would also like to have the option to operate the lights thru the included switch, which would allow me to turn the lights on for loading, unloading, camping etc. I'm not sure if this is even possible.

By looking at the instructions and diagrams, can someone help me determine the wiring process?

Thanks a bunch..........
Wilkie

Relay must remain vertical.

Ok, that's a start effjae. When you say "vertical" do you mean with the connector blades sticking out the bottom or top? And, out of curiosity, why does it need to be vertical?

Just trying to learn something new..........

Re: Wiring Help- Back-up Lights

Think of it this way.. Power to the the red and black (86 & 85 respectfully) connections power the relay and close connections 30 & 87. So back to front.. 87 powers the lights (hot to the lights) and 30 connects to the battery or "hot wire". 85 connects to a ground and 86 is powered by the switch. That will turn the on and off with the switch.

If the FJ's backup lights are a simple 12v to turn on circuit, you would connect connection 86 to the wire that turns them on. I haven't looked at the schematic, so I don't know how the FJ backup lights are wired. Personally, I would just leave the new ones on the switch and not mess with the factory backup lights. You could always turn the on when you need them.

I'll try and look at a schematic.. Ron

Re: Wiring Help- Back-up Lights

I recently installed some backup lights so maybe I can help.

First kokopelli's comments are right on the money!

The way I did it.
1.ran power from my battery through the firewall and along the driver's door sill until it ended up in the rear access door (one with tools). I also ran a signal wire to trip the relay along side the power wire.

2. connected the lights and grounded them within the rear hatch and hooked the wires up as stated by kokopelli.

3. up front I used a oem rocker switch with led indicator.

4. ran a tap from the reverse wire (forgot what color/will look up) that's located laterally to the driver's fuse box, and connected it to the switch, also connected ground and signal wire (that runs to the relay)

So now if I have the switch ON, when reversing, the rear lights turn on and the inicator led is lit (on the switch)

If you want light on demand and not only when reversing, the power switch needs to connect to a constant 12V.

If you want both the luxury of on demand and when reversing, etc.. that wiring is a bit more complicated.

good luck!
hope that helps a bit.

Re: Wiring Help- Back-up Lights

It can cause a fire hazard if not mounted vertically (blades down), what my IPF instructions said. About the only thing they said also.

Re: Wiring Help- Back-up Lights

Thanks for all the help so far guys. After reading your replies, I've decided to just wire the switch so that it's always hot. This way, I can turn on the lights whenever I need them.

Ok, now I only have 2 more questions:

*Where might be a good place to mount the relay so that it stays nice and dry? (and vertical) I don't want to have any problems down the road with corroded terminals.

*iCruiser, you mentioned that you used an OEM switch with an indicator light. Would you happen to have a part # for the switch?

Thanks again........

There's a bunch of threads on switches, but the gist is there are about 3 OEM switches available.

1. Tacoma Fog switch (no indicator)
2. Tacoma rocker fog light switch: 00550-35976
3. FJ Fog Switch (with indicator)

Number two is the cheapest at around $8-12
One and Three go for around $50-70

Here's a picture of SAS's setup with the Tacoma rocker.

This rocker does require some shaving of mounting hole.
