Pump the tires up to 100 psi. You will get much better mileage and the handling is awesome! It also helps to keep your FJ clean and well waxed to reduce wind resistance. Go commando! Weight reduction is important in more ways than one. Do not fill windshield washer fluid reservoir and never use the AC. Rolling stops are a must. Remove radio antenna and rear window wiper, again to reduce wind resistance. Leave the spare tire at home, less weight. Never allow passengers to ride with you. Always drive at 50 mph no matter what the speed limit is. Tailgate as closely as you can. Run the engine 1-1/2 quarts low on oil to reduce weight. Never fill the fuel tank more than 1/3rd for more weight reduction. Only drive the FJ on breezy days when the prevailing winds are at your back. I'm working on a windpower concept. It's sort of like a parachute attached to the front or rear depending on which way you are traveling relative to the wind. There are visibilty issues when using it, but as my grandma used to say, "what else is new?". Soon you will smile when you remember the good old days when gas was only $3.50/gallon. Your fill up will cost you $100 in the near future. Scooters and motorcycles will clog the streets, just like in a lot of third world countries.

Weight reduction will help. Get rid of all the crap you carry in the back, if your not out wheeling you don’t need the big tool bag, compressor, and tire chains riding along. If you only gas up to a 1/3 of a tank you’ll save about 90 lbs. If you can shave 100 lbs total you will save a little MPG.
Tire Pressures Up
Lose the Spare tire
Lose the Rack
Lose the seats and anything you don't use
Go on a diet (reducing driver weight)
Use premium
Drive slow
Monitor with a scanguage
Avoid stoplights (highway drving is better)
Shave your head if you like to stick it out the window
Teach your dog to keep his tongue tucked in if HE likes his head out the window
Forget above two and keep windows up (A/C off! This hurts mileage)
Or
Just trade it in for a Prius

Watch lots of NASCAR races on Sundays and learn how to tuck yourself right in and draft behind the big trucks on the highway. You'd be amazed how much that can save on a long road trip.
I based my post on prior posts that I've read - sorry, I missed the thread that did the test and couldn't find it in a search - do you have the link? I'd like to read it. I purposely chose not to buy my FJ with a roof rack because of what I read on this forum about mpg.
Well, going by your response, I should be getting 23 MPG. My last several trips going out of state were 21 MPG with the OEM roof rack.
Anyhow, a couple of minutes of searching [- wasn't really hard since old schoolers had to work for their research since it was all physical -
Here is a trick I use, first of all get a scangague. It always amazes me how much the mileage changes going into the wind or up a hill and the scangague shows you instantly. I will save 2-4 mpg just my letting off the gas pedal the slightest bit at certain times like when cresting a hill. The next thing is to utilize neutral when coming to a stop or going down a hill. If you dont need your foot on the gas then let it coast in neutral. My scangague shows better mpg while in neutral coasting than when in drive and coasting.....and my rig is an automatic.
I have a roof rack and ARB bumper and I routinely get over 20mpg.

I think it's time for someone to design an after market nose cone to improve the FJ's aerodynamics.

x2!
People don't utilize neutral enough.
I always laugh when i see people using the throttle to go 70 downhill.
