Just so that all of you know, that were taken advantage of pertaining to the Reese/OEM Hitch situation. I've talked to my best friend/lawyer (and big FJ Cruiser fan) here in Nor Cal and all it takes to remedy this situation is a nice letter (on law practice letterhead which won't cost anything if you know someone) to the said Dealerships of your intent to pursue legal recourse due to false misrepresentation of a equipped vehicle and you'll get their attention in no time and most likely with recourse. Doesn't matter whether or not your father has passed or if you're out of state. An out of state dealership will be happy to fix it after the work is approved by violating said Dealership. Good luck guys. Give 'em hell

Of COURSE, Sunnyside Toyota has decided that they will do nothing for me other than, accordng to them, do me a vafor by selling me the OEM hitch and wiring for MSRP. They dug up the paperwork and said since it doesn't SAY my dad ordered an OEM hitch, then they did their job. even though they TOLD him he'd get an OEM hitch, and the paperwork doesn't state they'd sell him a POS hidden hitch instead. What a bunch of crooks.
Here is a picture of the POS. Look at this wiring harness (when they initially installed it, they didn't even add the wiring harness at ALL! My dad didn't realize that until the first time he went to go tow something...)
Seriously, these kinds of actions give all dealerships a bad name. Check out how nice this wiring harness looks, and the nice rusty bolts.
It's not a great deal when you already paid for an OEM hitch and got a crappy Hideen hitch, and then have to pay for am OEM one AGAIN and then go through the trouble of installing it.
Get your money back from the "crappy Hideen hitch", and get yourself an OEM hitch.
Make them install it for giving you the wrong hitch.

I actually contacted Toyota, they contacted the dealership, and that's when they offered to sell me the parts for MSRP. You know, I have worked sales in the past, and the VERY LEAST I would have done (even if I thought the customer was completely wrong) would have been to say "I'm SO sorry about the mixup" and at least offer the parts for cost, not "Tough luck, want to pay too much TWICE for the parts we were supposed to sell you the first time?"
As it is, they KNOW what they did; throw whatever hitch they had on there to make a quick sale (going back through emails, I recall they didn't even put a harness on there, which my dad didn't realize until the first time he went to tow something, and SURPRISE! No harness, no lights!) They tried tell me "Your dad knew what he bought" and "he accepted the delivery of the vehicle" but I'm sorry, to me, that is no different than insurance companies using non-OEM parts for repairs to save money. It's not ethical, and it should NOT be the consumers responsibility to go over every aspect of the vehicle to look for TOYOTA part numbers (and, as an example, if I accept delivery but there is a problem that I do not notice, it is still covered under warranty and not VOID because I "accepted delivery of the vehicle")
I've been thinking about adding the hitch pretty soon and I wasn't sure which way to go. I was thinking the non-OEM hitch actually adds an additional cross member (even though it is below the silver trim) which *might add some additional strength to the frame assembly. In looking at the OEM unit, it bolts up directly to the existing frame cross member.
Do you have a sense of either one being any stronger than the other? I realize both are rated for the same tongue weight and load capacity but I'm just curious.
thanks!
