That was my recollection. Makes sense, if you think about it - since CB is essentially unlicensed, repeating it on licensed spectrum could in effect be sidestepping licensing (and the fairly reasonable set of rules that go with licensed spectrum use).
Any period spent listening to the junk on ch 19 in a high traffic area will make clear the advantage, I think.
In the long run, however, having a 2m station at headquarters for important stuations or improved coordination could be a good idea for us to pursue as a group. And it could be staffed by a bunch of folks taking turns, while adding another 'safety' layer to make the Ouray public officials that much happy with us as a group.

Channel 19 is enough to drive you insane! So true. Having a base station would definitely show we are very serious about safety.
What if we had a base station scanner setup that just monitored our 2m frequencies. The groups could then check in in the blind, and call for help if needed.
Not ideal, but it seems to me we're going to run out of hams pretty quickly.

that would work, could just use a radio with no mic attached as well

All I know is that me and the baby will not be doing trails....so we will be around and available to help out whereever we are needed. Well, she'll just be laying around sleeping and being cute.....
thats a good idea, a speaker station at the best western so folks could listen in for safety and general interest, it will need to be listening to the repeater frequency not the simplex, right?

Both if possible.
Katfish, start taking the online tests over at QRZ Ham Radio. Ground control to Major Kat. Come in fish.

I'll second it (as if Kat has extra time...). But the entry exam is really quite doable. In the future having a licensed HQ station operator shouldn't be too hard at all.
You guys should look into holding a HAM exam session at some point. All you need is 3 VE's (Volunteer Examiners) present to sign off on the exams (ARRL VEC and W5YI VEC rules).
If you don't have any VE's in the group then maybe you should look into becomming VE's! Look on the ARRL site for info on their VEC program; you could also look up the W5YI VEC group for info on their program as well.
73 DE,
Mike (W2MPL)
Hmmm, interesting point. Both my wife Shirley (KO5M) and I are ARRL VE's so there will be two of us at the summit!
However, anyone who passes the test will have to wait until the FCC assigns a callsign... Plus, we'd have to coordiate with the local ham club, etc. to ensure no toes were stepped on... But, I'm positive they'd assist and possibly even coordinate a test session.
What a hoot! Think of the bragging rights when folks could say... "I passed my technician test at the FJ Summit in Ouray!"

Uh....yeap, when I have time!
Seriously, Dan and I would love to do it. Time and $$ - we don't have either.....
