Re: Something to think about.

This one really was last year!

After the tail team leader tried to plow through the snow and since there was ice under it he went off the path... He had the only winch out of the group and it was broke.. Nothing like reversing up the switchbacks and doing a u-turn. This year... WINCH for me...

Re: Something to think about.

I have been in Yosemite CA, in July when the roads to the higher elevations(Tioga road to Tuolumne Meadow and Glacier Point Road) were still closed, we have pics of kids having snowball fights on the 4th of July!!! it was great! If some trails are closed will make due and enjoy the area anyway they allow us too!

that the road that runs up the western side of Yosemite? I've been there in snow. Yosemite is one of my favorite places.

i believe it is rte 120 from west out of Northern most entrance and it runs all the way over to the hwy 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range. on the east side it is a 10,000 foot cliff on the passenger side most of the way down! scary but beautiful. Going through the meadowlands you feel like your in the Alps it is just beautiful. We have camped in or near Yosemite more than anyplace else for vacations, and the kids have great memories of the park. No place like it anywhere! Glad you got to see it!

been there twice - once on a x-country journey in a '72 VW Camper, and once on a trip down from Portland Oregon when I lived there. I miss it

That would've been me. The reason we were there in the first place was because the Trail Team guy who was supposed to be navigating couldn't seem to read a map and by the time we got to the location pictured he'd already misdirected us twice (missing the trails we should have been on). The pictures show me attempting to get strapped out by the vehicle behind me. It was a no go since he couldn't maintain traction, so I had to drive down and around to the other side of the snowbank. My winch was working fine, however, since I was in the vehicle with the driver's side door partially blocked by the snow and couldn't see what the Trail Team guy was doing when he pulled the winch line out to attach to the vehicle on the other side of the snowbank (not pictured), I was unaware of the fact that he had pulled too much line out (leaving too few wraps on the drum) so that when I attempted to winch myself across, the cable-end pulled out of the clip that attached the line to the drum; thus it was doing nothing but spinning aimlessly since it wasn't attached to anything. Needless to say I'm still p!ssed off about it. On top of all that he took you guys back to Ouray the wrong way (skipping Corkscrew Gulch altogether) while I stayed behind to get my vehicle across the snowbank. I should probably take this opportunity to thank whoever it was that winched me across. I didn't catch his name, but he deserves a great big thanks. He got stuck in the snowbank as well (he drove into it for some strange reason), but another FJ that I was in behind him strapped him back out of the snow so he could wince me across. It was a definite cluster****.

This thread just keeps getting better! First the trails will be closed for snow, and now we find out the trail team guy wasn't too sharp. I hope the Chili is good!

I think he was sort of a Junior Trail Team guy. All I know is I'll be doing my own navigating in the future.
