I have a question for all of you. We were at the Summit last year and yes we do have a 4WD. A friend of ours is going this year and their FJ is 2WD.
In your opinion are there any trails that they might have problems on. I know that Imogene and Ophir are very easy and they shouldn't have a problem. What about Alpine Loop? or others?
Thanks for those of you that went on them.

Alpine loop will be fine as well....you'll see Honda Accords on it.
There are only a few roads in the San Juans that really require 4wd, unless the weather is really bad.....which it shouldn't be in July. Just make sure he's traveling in a group and they have decent recovery gear, JIC.

We did do Alpine last year and we thought the same thing. Yes we will all have recovery gear. We did see an HHR (Chevy) up there, don't think he made it though.

There was one climb on Imogene that would be more difficult. Several people with 4wd had to attempt it a couple of times. One person with manual stalled it several times. Engineer which is part of Alpine shouldn't be a problem. It is bumpy, but I don't remember any traction problems.
I think they would be fine on all the trails except Poughkeepsie.
