Re: I need help deciding what trails to sign up for!
I doubt Black Bear is going to be open this year at the Summit, this is due to the amount of snow fall and underlying ice. The forest service didn't open it up until the first day of the Summit last year because of the unstable ground of the ice melting. It may not open until June of this year. As far as the other trails you mentioned, most are 4-6 hours, except the Alpine Loop which will take all day which is three trails. I would also think at some of the higher elev some other may not be open either because of the snow fall amounts and the remaining low temps still at this time of year. It's 34 degrees right now in Ouray..

We'll have to find other trails to do...I'm signed up for Black Bear on Friday morning along with Dragon, uphill and LandCrusierSteve....We'll just end up finding our own trail

Isn't the Summit July 16th - July 20th?
Can you still sign up/change trails?
Re: I need help deciding what trails to sign up for!
A few years back I tried Imogene in early July. It was closed near the top. Still lots of snow and there was a dozer stuck in the mud!
Ya, a lot of snow this year. But with global warming it should all melt in a couple of weeks.
But to answer the question of trails... Imogene and Ophir are really scenic. Quite easy too.
Last year I did Black Bear totally stock. Again not a hard trail, but the switchbacks need your complete attention. And there are some bragging rights that come with Black Bear.

There are many, many trails in the area such as the ones on our trails list. If you are concerned with what you are going to do, I would suggest going on Amazon and ordering one of the many trail guides covering the area before heading out.
