Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

I am down to the nitty gritty with the dealer now, and what is the better option for the FJ? Bumper mounted lights in factory holes, or the roof mounted lights with dam? What are the pros and cons of each in your opinion? Thanks in advance!

Re: Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

As with most things, personal preference plays a major part.

Do you like the look of roof mounted lights?

Do you plan on lifting and/or wheeling your FJC? Will height affect where you park?

I have bumper mounted lights.

Re: Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

I have the bumper-mounted lights, and IMHO, they are more prcatical for everyday use. You can use them on road if you need to, wheras you can only use the roof-mounted ones off-road.

I would be remiss in not adding that I hardly ever go off-roading, so I do not need the roof lights, plus I can't add anything to my FJ's roof anyway, even the stock roof rack, as it would no longer fit in our garage if I did so. (The top and sides of our garage are brick.) But, even if I could, I still would leave my roof "bare", so to speak.

Best of luck in deciding and post up some pics when you get your new FJ!

Re: Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

I guess depending on where you live a big down fall to the roof mounted lights is that you can not drive with them on going down the road. You can however with the bumper mounted lights. I like the roof mounted lights but am going to be putting bumper mounted lights on so they are 100% functional on a day to day basis.

Re: Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

Thanks for all the good info guys. The roof mounted with the dam have a nice clean look, but the bumper mounted are actually legal and useable day to day.

Re: Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

I have both as well. I really like the airdam look on the stock rack.

If you want to ever go to an aftermarket rack, you may want to hold off on the airdam & lights till then.

I rarely use either pair. On road the bumper auxilary lights only come on with brights on, and I rarely use bright in the city.

Offroad they are both nice to have. I think either one would help you on night runs.

Of course HIDs would do the same thing in your headlights.

Re: Help with Bumper vs Roof Mounted Lights!

check out the article in the middle of this blog post it describes the benefits of various light placement... you won't need to watch the install video at the top but the PDF has additional insights.
