Is there a "proper" way to drive the FJ?

Hey folks, this is going to be my first 4x4. I'm gonna be jumping into a 6-spd. The question I have is: Is there a do or don't list for the FJ in terms of driving?

I know there are tons for the Jeep or many other 4x4 for that matter...such as:

Don't drive on pavement on 4hi or 4lo

Don't make turns with the diff. locked and etc.

What shouldn't I do with the 6-spd FJ with:

A)ATRAC on

B)Diff. Locked

C)ATRAC+Diff. Locker mod

Thanks guys!

There are things you shouldn't do, but idiots on this forum have done all sorts of crazy crap--like driving 35mph in low range.

So I'm not sure what to say.

Maybe 4hi in the snow if you have that problem. I don't deal with snow so I am not sure on that. Stay out of 4lo on pavement. The diff lock should be unnecessary on pavement, except maybe pulling a boat up the ramp or something. I am not sure on the a trac, I have the 2wd. But owning several 4x's in the past is good enough. You don't need to put unnecessary strain on your driveline on pavement in 4 lo with it locked up, there will be a lot binding and wear on everything. If you wanna show off and so some burnouts and donuts for your buddies, do it in the dirt. Your front end will thank you, and your diff lock will always work as it should.

Re: Is there a "proper" way to drive the FJ?

I have a 2wd, but in my previous truck, I used 4wd all the time. I had an '02 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 single cab short bed, with a V8 and no limited slip diff. So every time it rained, I would drive in 4h, so I wouldn't fishtail all over the place. If I barely punched the gas in that thing, I would light up the tires. I would drive 80mph in 4h in the rain all of the time. I would leave people at stoplights in the pouring rain. They prolly didn't even know we were racing. I was just an immature kid back then, still am.

A, B and C only work when vehicle is in low range, and your center differential is locked. Hence, as you said above, no driving on pavement. This is true for surfaces with no give.

There are some serious wheelers on this forum that recommend that you do not exceed 5-8 mph in low range, which means you will be in 1st gear, or sometimes 2nd gear. The FJ engine produces a lot of power and torque applied to the wheels (low range 1st gear has a final gear of 41:1) is significant with very little trottle movement. Personally I will follow the advise of our gurus, except (1) when on sand dunes (and rear diff is locked) and/or (2) when wheeling to crawl over obstacles and the ground between obstacles (sometimes several hundred feet apart) is soft loose soil or sand, but even then limit my speed to 10-15 mph. Many times your tires are aired down when in low range, and driving fast on an unproven surface may result in drive train damage if your tire grabs a rock or tree root that has no give. A tire tends to wrap around a object when aired down and does not spin out or break free.

I'll check the FAQS. Thanks for the link. In terms of the manual, is there one online? I don't have an FJ yet, so I can't read mine.

Tranman's thread does a great job explaining the differences in traction modes.

Repair manual, Electrical Manual, Owners Manual, New Features Manual, New Vehicle Manual, and the Magazine... thanks - supernova333 Toyota FJ Cruiser: Resources & Documentation Archive

One of the best resources are the FJ Trail Teams, get to an event, and ask all kinds of dumb questions to them.
they have been beating these trucks up harder than anyone and have a signifigant amount of experience. and are paid by toyota to impart that to FJC drivers like us.

Many events have trails and sections that are perfect for "newbies".

I'll Echo KLD's statements above.

Note you have Fulltime 4wd (in your Manual) so your main question are : when do I engange Atrac, when do I use the locker, and when do I use 4 lo.

the FAQ has links explaining Atrac, and the lockers... Tranman presents a great summary.

Re: Is there a "proper" way to drive the FJ?

Thanks Sparky! I read Tranman's thread. Awesome summary of systems. Regarding Trail Teams, I went to the off-road expo last weekend....they were there at the FJ booth. TOo bad they were swamped. I hope they're still running when I get my FJ. I'll definetly join up.

Re: Is there a "proper" way to drive the FJ?

As fast as neccesary as slow as possable.
This is a do.

Being netural, I'd like to say this truck will inspire your driving talent, a very safe ride that builds confidence. If you are new to offroading find someone to teach you, like a friend, or another driver that has a 4x4 background.

Dont's ?
Dont offroad without at least a spotter and communication.

These are my two.
