Differential Problems ?

I have seen several posts on this forum (one today infact) and others with regards to rear diff failures. However, I find nothing on this issue when searching the net, which leads me to think it is a small % with regards to numbers of vehicles made. HOWEVER, I would really like some better facts before I buy toward the end of this year.

Is there another source for information other than the forums or blogs?

Re: Differential Problems ?

I've only heard of one failure. Maybe I should look a little harder. It also could be a freak thing.

Re: Differential Problems ?

I have been reading the threads on this forum a long time and I too believe issue(s) with the FJ Cruiser rear differential is(are) an isolated case(s); certainly it is not wide spread.

Re: Differential Problems ?

Two cases that I know of were driver induced failures.

Re: Differential Problems ?

I think I might have posted the same observation in the other thread today. Just seems to me that there are what probably 100k of these rear ends in use, and only what 4 or 5 including the ones posted on TTORA have failed.

I figure if you really researched it you would probably find more failures in other vehicles. But I really don't have the time!

I always end up soundling like a toyota cheerleader, but they do seem to take care of the big problems and standby the vehicles. If the numbers were greater I gotta figure they would offer a solution.

I also tend to share your opinion on this issue from what I have found to date. After going through the V6 headgasket recall issue with my 92 pickup, I really can't say much bad about Toyota quality/standing up to resolve problems. I would just hope they would continue to stand by there product if this also becomes a bigger problem.

Too much power and your rear end bouncing up and down with all the weight of the vehicle on it is bad!!! I only have one of the two cases I know of documented:

Thanks, I figured this and/or too much speed. I assume the FJ cruiser locker is similar to that on my FJ 80 in that you are supposed to keep your speed below 5 mph with the axles locked.

Re: Differential Problems ?

Of course I say that and then read this thread:
http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...-down-pos.html
However, I think the jury is still out on this one...
