Hello, I am relatively new to this forum and have a few questions. I am in the process of installing a TRD Supercharged 5.7L IForce V-8, tranny and all associated running gear from an 07 Tundra into my 07 FJ.
I was wondering if this has been done before on any level and if so, some tips to make this install easier.
** FYI from the OP, there are a few of progress pics as attachments within the 38 pages; however I wouldn't bother reading this Thread as I have quit posting. I got tired of dealing with Armchair Quarterbacks. Once the project is fully complete, I will come back and post a build thread with Pics and a Video of it running. Until then no mas. Just wanted to save people the time before reading this whole thing for no payoff.**
This is very much a realistic project. I have personally seen a 5.7 in a FJ Cruiser while over in Dubai and while it didn't have a S/C installed there was room for it. I was in the middle of doing a project to build our own 5.7 S/C FJ Cruiser for a customer of ours and had the shop that would be performing the work ready to go but the customer backed out before we got started.
The pics are prior to the build, however, you are right. As of now, the Rims are 5 lug with adapters. The rims are from a BMW X5. 20x9.5 in the front and 20X11 in the rear. I want to keep the Wheel and tire fitment so we are toying with pulling a rear end out of an X5 or possibly the X6 as it is already rated to 400 HP. That way when the build is complete, we will have eliminated the adapters.
Those are the rims from the X5 4.8is, my Dad had that car for a while. You should save some money and just buy a used x5 4.8is....one of the best SUVs ever made
btw: I am extremely excited to see this build and I applaud you for undertaking this. Your FJ already is one of the coolest looking ones I have ever seen and the new engine will just take it to the next level :bigthumb::bigthumb::bigthumb:
Isn't the 5.7 just a bored/stroked version of the 4.7? I might be mistaken, but I thought the outer dimensions were the same for both of the motors. The SC would add some height, but that is easier to deal with than width.
No the 5.7 is a new aluminum motor the 4.7 was cast iron block. I had the SC on my sequoia and can't imagine that motor and SC on a FJ not sure the rear end could handle it. Lots of up grades would be needed in my opinion.
I like the Halo's alot. Unfortunately the way the lighting is set up with the FJ you are not able to use just the Halo without the HID bulb coming on as well. I found a kit that allows for Hi/Low beam as well as the Angel Eyes. The installer wasn't able to separate the two with wiring. However I found a simple solution; as that was not acceptable to me.
Simply detach the plunger switch on the E-Brake and firmly re-ground it to the subfloor. This will now allow you to individually control the Halo,Hi and Low beams seperately.
The only negative is that now the E-Brake light will come on in the dash console. I just got into the dash and blacked the light out as it is easy to see from the E-Brake lever if it is engaged or not.
Lastly, the bulbs are very easily replaceable and can honestly be replaced in under a minute through 2 quick disconnects in the kit.
I do not possess the knowledge as far as the 5.7 actually being a bored out 4.7. I'm sure there is someone following this thread that has the answer. If so, all technical advice or shared knowledge is more than welcome.
This has yet to be the "Ultimate Mod" here in this forum. This takes home the cake if it goes through. I dont get the logic but hey, i'll support this project.
This is something I want to do too, in a 100,000 miles or so. (read: a couple years) I would think if an LS would fit, a 5.7 would fit. It can't be that much wider, if at all. Granted, I haven't measured one... SDHQ is working on one for those that haven't seen it. Obviously, it has some work done to fit the engine, but width wise, it doesn't look like they had to do much to fit it in there.
The SDHQ build is entirely different. They are using I believe and LS6?
The 5.7 Toyo is wider than the LS6. Not counting the fact that the front isn't remotely anything like an FJ anymore . Again , I am sure it can be done with lots of fab work involved. By the way, the Fj build there is over 2 years in the making. Not necessarily because of fab work, I think they are doing other projects for the owner.
Right, like I already said...^^ But by looking at it, it doesn't look like the stock framerails were cut and widened or anything. Anyone have any actual measurements at this point between an LS and a Toyota 5.7? Next time my brother is in town, I'll measure his Tundra bay and 5.7 and my FJ comparable space just for fun.
There are a clouble of V8 FJ's in the UAE but not sure what V8 they are using , the earlier 4.7 or the newer 5.7....there is a chance some of them are even running Chrysler Hemi's too !
With the Supercharger no less. That thing looks like it was meant to be there. Only x factor would be the 4WD, since that Tacoma is 2WD. Also can't tell if all the accessories are there, but I would assume that they are?
I should have some pics up on Tuesday. They will be teardown pics of the project. Just so everyone knows Fab work hasn't been started yet.
1. The first priority are measurements and build plan.
2. The build will obviously start in the engine bay and work back from there.
3. Front suspension will be tackled after the engine tranny and t-case are in.
4. All electrical systems will be tested to work without issues.
5. Lastly we will finish up with the rear then cosmetic issues.
A couple of the priorities of this build was the concept that:
A. This can be done and
B. This is a project that most can accomplish if they save their money for a couple years as I did. I am not made of money, so as with most people that have a project in mind, saving and planning make all the difference.
Thanks for everyone's support. The builder as of now wants to remain unknown until the project is complete. So sorry about keeping that from you.
I am very interested and subscribed! Best of luck on this unique build. The numbers on that SC'ed 5.7 are quite spectacular!
I was recently wondering if anyone had ever, or could ever swap in a 2JZ-GTE Twin Turbo Supra motor into the FJ Cruiser. Highly modified 2JZ motors can run north of 1000 HP and at 3.0 liters its weight might be comparable to the 1GRE-FE 4.0 motor in the FJC. It might be too long to fit (inline six) I don't know... What made me wonder was seeing 1JZ 2.5 liter supra TT engines swapped into '90s 4 Runners.
My understanding is that it's always easier to boost an engine that came from the factory with forced induction because of the lower compression ratio. Todays high power naturally aspirated motors run high compression and will break if you Turbo/SC them and raise the boost too high without changing internals and lowering compression (so I've read, correct me if I'm wrong. Certainly no expert here!) Hence the capabilities of the 2JZ-GTE twin turbo.
One can always dream of a 2JZ FJC!! It's too bad Toyota quit using and developing high power twin turbo motors! Turbo is the "replacement for displacement," with a better power to weight ratio to boot!
Again, I look forward to seeing OP's drivetrain swap come to fruition!!!
I too have wondered about this. I've asked in the past & the reply's I got were that the HP difference is not worth the work. I really don't care that much about the HP difference, I just want the V-8 rumble. If I had the cash I'd do it.
