Best setting for 4-8 inches of snow?

Is H4 the best setting? Anything else I should think about?

When driving on paved roads on that much snow, yes 4HI is best.

Why does that mode damage the car on dry roads?

Does ATRAC kick in automatically?

Stopping. not going 50 mph in 4+ inches of snow... where the road is, where that tractor trailer thinks the road is... where the heck that deer is coming from...

TRAC will kick in automatically in 2 Hi,

ATRAC only works in 4 LO

with the automatic, in 4wd you lock the wheels together so they must rotate the same amount. on high traction surfaces when cornering this causes binding which can damage the transfer case (and other parts of the 4wd system).

read the faq in the newbie section it has links to detailed discussions of this
