Unhappy OEM Running Board Question

Hello everyone,

I'm a newbie here - yesterday I had the OEM Running Boards installed on my 07' fj Cruiser. My wife is very unhappy with the foot space which is roughly 6 inches. She feels that the installation may be incorrect as she barely has room to place her foot on the running board when entering the vehicle.

Does anyone have OEM running boards installed on your fj? If so, is a 6 inch foot space the norm for this type of running board?

Re: OEM Running Board Question

The boards bolt up to pre-existing holes on the body. Rock sliders to mounts on the frame, so you can't put either in the wrong place. So yes they are correct in depth.

Re: OEM Running Board Question

There are several rock rails (sliders) that may stick out farther than the OE running boards. Put some non slip grip tape on the rails and they should provide quite a nice step. There are some step rails out there too...Predator, I think is the manufacturer.

Re: OEM Running Board Question

Welcome to the Great FJ Forum. You can get some extented rockrails or oval bars that work better. Lots of pictures and treads on the different ones. Just hit the search link below your welcome Provence in the upper left area. Lots of nice options. It's always best to check out the treads before buying. Almost everything is checked out. I have a tread "best mods under $300" that has several options and pics. Another tread I started is "Mods I wish I didn't do". This one will show how it's better to research than just go ahead and mod. Good luck and have some fun.

Re: OEM Running Board Question

Interesting that the OE boards seem shallow to your wife.

I put the Rearwheels step tubes on mine, (just this weekend). They stick out just a bit, I thought perhaps too much. But now that they are on I think they're fine. They are basically 2.25 or 2.5 inch black stainless tubes with steps bolted to the top in two places. The Steps are about 6 inches wide but since they are mounted on tubes you can stick the end of your shoe out over the step surface. Perhaps this makes the step feel a little deeper.

Now that they are installed I have to train myself to use them. So far I seem to want to step over them as if they were not there. Quality is high but so is the price. Don't be alarmed by the pic, they do not really sit out as far as it appears in the picture.

I'm also looking for some kind of step for the oem rock rails. Some guy posted on ***************.com that Toyota makes some kind of step that eithers bolts or hooks on the oem rails. Anyone know of these steps?

Re: OEM Running Board Question

My mom said the same thing. After I got the lift, the RBs have to be used now. She said that they don't have enough foot room. She wants to place the whole freakin' length of her foot on it and not have her foot hang off the edge. I said, turn your foot so that it's running with the length of the RBs, not the width. She refuses.

You could get some of those power steps that tuck up under the frame and retract when you open the door.
