So what exactly does this mean, can I drive it on the highway for 2 hours straight on cruise control? (and back 2 hours) I've only got 23 miles on my new FJ and the wife wants me to take her shopping 2 hours away and it's all relatively flat highway. I know you should vary engine speed to help the rings set but will 4 hours of freeway driving on this brandy spanking new engine prevent or ruin proper ring seating?
On a side note.... I had to laugh at the salesman. He said although Toyota recommends 5K service intervals, we recommend 3,500 miles service intervals at this altitude (dealer is at 5,700 ft). Since when did altitude have anything to do with servie intervals. O.K. more snow, many very cold starts (-9F this morning) but that's about it.

I would not run more than 15 minutes at any one speed. Once you hit 1,000 miles then do what you want. I would also wonder about altitude affecting oil changes. Never heard of such a thing. Now the cold weather? Absolutely. Altitude? Absolutely not. However. I would also recommend the first oil change at 2500 miles and then 5000 after that for normal driving. If you get into dusty, dirty conditions and alot of 4-wheeling, then change at 2500-3000 miles.

Changing RPMs every, 1-2 min. for 1000's of miles is crazy. Also the so called break in method of 1000's of miles was meant for old v-8 engines the piston rings are so different on a new Toyota a good 20 min drive running though all your gears should be fine, you rings will be sealed.

All I can think they might mean, is that engines lose HP and torque at altitude. Maybe the reasoning is that they work harder then? Also Toyota recommends 5000 mile intervals for light duty. They say 3000 for hauling, heavy traffic, lot's of 4x4ing and etc. Maybe the extra work the engine does at altitude is the equivalent of this heavy duty schedule? Just a thought, not gospel. I use synthetic oil and think that puts me back on the 5000 mile schedule.
Agree with Chatsworth. Some of these recommendations are historical myths, like not waxing a new paint job, towing a trailer, etc. I try to drive any new car in town on surface streets for the first 100 miles or so, and then not drive it hard for a while, meaning no full throttle runs for a 1000 miles or so. This has worked for me for over 2 dozen new cars.
My break in procedure is to drive it normally...and not floor it or beat on it.
I cant do continuos speeds anyway , the roads and parkways here (NY) are too stop and go.
The most important thing to me is that first oil change , I will do 2 before its due for the first one.
