Re: Compass

Yeah agreed the inclinometer is pretty helpful. No, it is not intended for road use but for those of us rocking back and forth on top of something it does help me to decide if I should back up or keep going. Once it stops moving anyway.

The compass does precess as decribed by the other pilot above. Excessive precession is, I found, caused by those instruments that have a smaller magnet. This is required because the compass is mounted in a steel car instead of an aluminum airplane. Thus auto compasses are apparently really delicate and not always strong to turn properly.

Re: Compass

I was too cheap to get the digital compass console option. My son got me a nice non-digital compass to mount on the dashboard. Same thing happens. Is always on S or W. I think there are some strong electric fields that run near the top of the dashboard that cause this.

Can only get the compass to "work" if I hold it close to my body and far from the dash and side windows.

Re: Compass

Interesting, thanks for letting us know.

If I ever take that console apart, I'm going to see if I can switch the compass with the inclinometer.

Re: Compass

anyone noticed that when the FJ has been off..the compass resets itself back to North...and then when you start it up it spins to the correct direction. So if you're ever stranded and lose all your battery power..do not use the FJ's compass to determine where you're going

Re: Compass

What I am really in need of is a moral compass.

But this is really the wrong forum for that - by far.

Re: Compass

I too noticed the relative uselessness of the compass, so I am glad my FJ did not have that package. My old '95 Mitsu. Montero had a digital compass that worked GREAT, so the real problem is not the lack of technology but the lack of "give a damn" by Toyota.

I bought a cheapy $6 ball compass from the auto store, but that was less than useless. Very inaccurate and would get stuck all the time.

From my kayak hobby, I have learned that KAYAK compasses are EXCELLENT quality and I plan to add the below to my dash soon, but I'm looking for one in black.

Here is the eBay link: Suunto Compass
