5)Side Mirror blind spots-1 Meow.

It's the first Toyota I've ever owned and by far the best damn vehicle I've ever owned! And I am in love with my 2000 Prelude. Sorry, Honda.
Buy the little round convex blind spot mirrors.

Out of 5 complaints, 2 are mirrors? sheesh...

Re: FJ OWNERS! What dont you like about your FJ?

Aforementioned, but to reiterate:
- Lack of a factory option to upgrade the Bridgestone all-weather tires.
- Lack of ventilation from static side windows.
- Odd visor coverage.
Otherwise, I am completely satisfied. I find the degree of creature comforts to be in good balance given the intended utility-nature of the vehicle.
As for gas mileage, perhaps my driving conditions and/or habits differ from previous posters; the first three tanks have provided me 19.5, 23.7 and 24.0 mpg. Entirely satisfactory, but almost anything is a gas-mileage improvement over my FJ60.

The dealer experience was good with the exception of the 'upsale' during the 'paper work' session. I am an experienced sales person and a fair mechanic (certified)- we were stuck with a real 'sheister'...and I don't mean that kindly.
That is one thing I hate about buying a new car. You find a salesperson you really like and want to buy a car from and then once you are ready to pull the trigger and sign your John Han**** on stuff, they stick you with a major scumbag.

Re: FJ OWNERS! What dont you like about your FJ?

Let's see if we can sum up some of these:

The windshields pit and crack real easy.
Hopefully you'll live in a state where you have mandatory insurance coverage for this, (SC, we have no deductible for insured windshield replacement) if not, keep your deductible low.

I hate the archaic front seat adjustments! I feel like I'm back in my 87 4rnr. It would probably only cost $50 bucks more to put in electric adjustable seats.
Buy a Lexus, it will parallel park for you also...

But heres my list of what could be done better.
  1. Lack of sunroof option.
  2. I dont like the fact that the rear passenger windows dont open.
  3. Wish the rear seats folded FLAT!!
  4. Wished the rear seats reclined (like how they do in the much cheaper SCION tc).
  5. Wish the rear tail lights were flush
  6. Wish that everyone got some better stock tires.
  7. Passenger armrest should be standard equipment
GOBI has a sunroof mod that can be installed,
I agree also with the rear windows, and back windows
Back Seats can be removed if necessary
Tail light, and stock tires?
passenger armrest and reclining back seat are moot if you are the primary driver.

Other than bumping my head on the latch to get in the back seat (that has minimal leg room), no major complaints thus far.
And I agree that those who have been whining about lack of posh extras are just... whining. I mean, you knew when you test drove the thing that those were not options. This is a real truck. If you want luxury, buy a Touareg. or a Cayenne. You get what you pay for.
-M
LOL, didn't even think about the rear door latch that she's always bangin her head on until she wrote the thread, I have a daughter in a car seat also and somehow I've always managed to DUCK!

Keep em comin guys, this has been really informative. I am a little worried about the issues with the paint chipping and weak windshield but other than that.

Right now I drive a 97 chevy cheyenne short bed short cab with a V6, so there is really now way the FJ will not be a huge improvement over that. I also agree that the FJ is a utility truck, not some blinged out G-ride from the latest rap video. I want a truck that looks good dirty!!

I also totally agree about the lame tires that come stock, I am seriously considering ordering mine with the TRD wheel/tire option just to get those BFG AT's to tide me over until a lift with new shoes.
I had a 95 Dodge Ram 1500, and worked it to death...it still runs like a champ now (although with a friend of mine now...used the funds for MODS!!!)
I had a V8, so to me the GAS mileage is moot (there's that word again)...as long as I don't have to pay $70 for a fillup I don't mind.

Very well design for the price, no complain.
Add a Diesel motor, it will be my car for long time...
I would have bought a Diesel if the option was available, but this sums it up nicely...it is a spartan vehicle that looks good. If you want looks, bells and whistles by all means go buy them, if not, don't.

HEATED SEATS??!?!?!?!? oh puhleeeaze

BTW jfoobar: there is a light in the cargo area, it blends in well with the interior lining, so it is easy to miss unless it is turned on...that's my excuse for not noticing it for the first two months!!

I am a prospective buyer and I love the FJ, the look, the utility, that its a Toyota. However, I know that no vehicle is perfect (I already know that it wont fit in my garage) so I was wondering if you owners would pitch in and let me know some of the things that bug you about the FJ, things that a prospective buyer like me should be aware of.

P.S. I am test driving one the first week of April, what should I look/watch out for?

I am also 6'5", will that be a problem in the FJ?

Let's see I love my FJ and are really enjoying it but if I could snap my finger and change a few things they would go like this...

1) Why in the world would toyota put an antenna on this vehicle when on the Scion XB that I own 6 of they have it fabricated into the windshield.
2) The stock tires are a joke.
3) The windhshield as most of you know that I am on my fourth is a big piece of S**T
4) The visibility is horrible but I can deal with that so we can scratch this one off
5) The paint like all toyotas is horrible
6) Bumpers???? I understand the look and like it but there is no reason that on a 32K truck they should be made of all plastic especially for the purpose of this vehicle
7) Headliner would have preffered if the entire interior was the darker grey especially the headliner. I got mud splattered all over it and it's a ***** to get out.
8) Skid plates??? I think they might be made of butter.

Again no vehicle is perfect these are just my pet peeves about my FJ. I will say that stock it is the best performing off road vehicle that I have ever ran through a trail and it's capabilities are impressive I am looking forward to seeing what else can be done to this rig. On road it is very comfortable as well I drove to Orlando 15 hours and I was more comfortable in my FJ than the Land Rove LR3.

Re: FJ OWNERS! What dont you like about your FJ?

Wooooody: Thinketh before thou speaketh. I am not the only one driving this vehicle. The other drivers height & weight varies. Therfore, the mirrors need to be adjusted before a different driver gets behind the wheel. This is basic drivers ed 101. The 3 Grrrrs!!! stays for lousy switch location.

Re: FJ OWNERS! What dont you like about your FJ?

And there was only one gripe about mirrors. There was also a gripe about the location of a mirror switch which is actually an electrical device. Switches are not mirrors. Mirrors are not switches.
