Check out the guards from Steelcraft. They look better than the Manik's IMO.

Steelcraft

By the looks of it's placement, It should work, and
in the worst case, we could shave a 1/4" or so off
the bottom edge of the mount if needed...

Re: tail light guards

Bandi, It sounds like it needs to be modified after talking with Larry at Dirty Parts. I would like to see pictures of what mods need to be done. Any recommendations on how to remove the mount. Specifically, that bolt is very close to the door and it is extremely hard to back it off without taking the paint with it!

Steelcraft
When I want a tail light guard I want something that will actually PROTECT against brushes, not something that after the first DING will bend. Those look VERY weak and look to be mainly for show (gloss black aluminum!?) I prefer mine powder-coated black to match my brush guard, shiny bumpers, bull bars, brush guards, etc just don't look like they will protect...if you're looking for "class" then don't go with Maniks since they are built to look mean, and be strong, if you ARE looking for class, then go with Steelcrafts or those "Rear Wheels" ones. But I can't see them taking anywhere near the damage Manik's could.

As I've said before, it's not the tail light guard that's going to bend. It's the small mounting bracket that is in the front. They are well made, solid, and the back end mounts solidly, but the front is just a small piece of metal that goes under the taillight, and bends quite easily. When that bends, if there is enough force, and causes body damage. Believe me, I know from experience. Mine are sitting in my garage. I'm not making that mistake again..

As for the removal, the only thing I can suggest,
is to slide some painters tape up in there as a
barrier, and keep slight outward pressure (maybe
using a putty knife or such) on the mount as you
loosen the nut so it does not make contact with
the door paint...

Re: tail light guards

While the mount was on, I used a dremel with a cut-off wheel and coarse sandpaper to the bottom of the Bandi Mount. I shaved the bottom at an angle to clear the guard. A little patientce and touchup paint, and your good to go.

Re: tail light guards

FYI-The steelcraft guards use thick tubing for the frame and solid metal for the guard part.

They're actually VERY solid. The mounts are the weakest link for sure and WILL bend before anything else...Savage know-it-all. I looked at them ALL before chosing the steelcraft. They're also powder coat AND I had them spray their ALUMINIUM version for me for added long term durability.

Already saved one lens as I was backing into my garage (bumped a bike hanging from my wall). Would've cracked or at least scratched the lens if they weren't there...and not a mark on the guards.

Also, unfourtunately I don't think their website shows the FJ versions which look MUCH better than the example online.

Their brush guard is good too, but because they designed it for NO DRILLING, the mounting points leave a little to be desired.
