Question on 6MT transmission

Is the transmission/clutch in the FJ the same one as in the Tacoma?

I ask because I currently have a 2007 Lexus IS250 6MT, which DOES have the transmission from the Tacoma, and it's completely unsuited for use in a luxury car. The shift action is vague, notchy and has long throws, and the clutch sounds like a jar of marbles when it gets warmed up.

So, I guess I am wondering if the FJ has any of these issues. I kind of have a feeling that even if the FJ has the setup from the Tacoma, because that setup is in a truck as originally intended, it might be more agreeable.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

EDITED TO ADD: The clutch on the IS also engages like an on/off switch. Is the clutch in the FJ more progressive?

Re: Question on 6MT transmission

My recollection is the MT6 is unique to the FJ, but the auto is not. My only complaint is reverse is geared too high in my opinion. I have no issue with the sensitivity of the clutch and do like to wheel it on medium to fairly tough trails.

Re: Question on 6MT transmission

I spoke with a toyota rep on the phone last year, asking him whether Toyota was planning on maintaining the MT for the FJ. (Given that Toyota only offers the 4-runner in auto, I was concerned that toyota might also go this route with the FJ). He said the MT was a new transmission designed for the FJ. From other aspects of the conversation, it was clear he had offroad 4-WD experience and seemed informed on other FJ issues...so I took his comments at face value. My MT is very smooth, good action clutch, I like it very much. I also have the TRD quickshifter so my throws are shorter than stock.

Re: Question on 6MT transmission

My two complaints with the 6MT is that 4th, 5th and 6th need to be higher and sometimes it won't go into 1st gear all the way unless I double clutch it or put it in second gear first. I would also agree with the earlier statement that reverse can go lower.

Re: Question on 6MT transmission

Mine is smooth for a truck, reverse is a little high, otherwise I am very happy with it so far.

I had that problem at first, now, I just make sure I put it in first as I'm rolling before coming to a complete stop and it goes in fine.

Clutch is pretty progressive, just engages higher in the pedal movement. Can't wait to install the short shifter, I have it, just haven't gotten around to getting it in yet.
